Hearing held on helicopter bill

Minimum altitude regulations are not the answer...It's not just about the level of noise generated but also about the frequency of the flights.

Friday and Sunday they're over my house every three or 4 minutes at the peak of the helicopter rush hour...Thanks to the suggested route transmitted by the airport to the helicopter pilots association. They are now routed from a point near Jessup Neck (sorry Southold) across a small series of wetlands on North Haven then South over Northwest Creek. It is referred to as a sparsely populated area! We protect view sheds how about protection of a sound shed.

We're never going to get the cooperation of the FAA on this...The answer lies not in the air but on the ground! Simply deny the helicopters a place to land...Stop taking FAA funding for the East Hampton Airport and in a few years we regain local control there...If they haven't done so already the East End municipalities should enact local bans on helicopter landings with the exception of legitimate emergencies. I believe that North Haven already has a law in place.

In the meantime route ALL helicopter flights to East Hampton Airport over the Atlantic (I don’t buy the safety argument for flying over land) and bring them in on the most direct route from the shore! It's a far shorter distance from the ocean to the airport than from the bays.

That would bring them right over Georgica Pond. Given the size of the estates down that way I’d guess that it is a less densely populated area than is under the current route ;)

It would be fascinating to watch the fireworks when some of those who are traveling to the area by helicopter are forced to deal with the attendant noise.

Bill

Second hearing held on helicopter bill

I believe your last paragraph is,atleast,Partly in error. There was a posting on the North East Helicopter Pilots Association website last year that gave the waypoints for the new route. It sends the helicopter traffic East over Jessup's Neck, then transiting the center of North Haven to a point over Shelter Island Sound where they turn South to the airport. My observations both from my home on North Haven, under the path, and from the water seem to confirm this.

These flights benefit very few and aggravate thousands. Let's start considering the Sound Scape of the East End as important as the View Scapes that are starting to be protected.

My Test for a call to the complaint line is as follows: If while listening to a radio at a normal level of volume a helicopter passes overhead and I can no longer make out what is being said I pick up the phone. More often than not the helicopter is flying at about the 2500 foot level.

None of the current proposals is going to solve the problem!

Lithograph maker says John Lennon exhibit is a farce

I'm surprised that no one has sued this "connoisseur" for Libel.

"In law, defamation (also called vilification, slander, and libel) is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressively stated or implied to be factual, that may harm the reputation of an individual, business, product, group, government or nation. ..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libel

He's really treading on the edge with his website!

In my humble opinion his approach is less scholarly than it is pedantic.

Pedantic-"adj.
Characterized by a narrow, often ostentatious concern for book learning and formal rules: a pedantic attention to details.

academic, bookish, donnish, scholastic. These adjectives mean marked by a narrow, often tiresome focus on or display of learning and especially its trivial aspects: a pedantic writing style; an academic insistence on precision; a bookish vocabulary; donnish refinement of speech; scholastic and excessively subtle reasoning."

The Press should be ashamed for giving him a platform for his bilious rants.

bilious-"1 a: of or relating to bile b: marked by or suffering from liver dysfunction and especially excessive secretion of bile c: appearing as if affected by a bilious disorder
2: of or indicative of a peevish ill-natured disposition
3: sickeningly unpleasant "

I would like to publicly express my sincere apologies to both Mr. Arseneau and the Press for my own peevish behavior.

My belligerence had no basis in fact and was primarily due to a "bad" day." Sep 20, 08 7:53 AM

Pickerell takes B1 Hydro class at North Sea Harbor

It's great to see that power boat raicng still exsts out here!

Too bad the inboard classes have disappeared from the area. The APBA Gold Cup was held twice ('31 and '32) out on lake Montauk!

One small correction...The American Power Boat Association was founded at the Columbia Yacht Club in NYC in February of 1903." Oct 17, 08 3:01 PM

Sally Pope introduces her first resolution

Reminds me of a time, some years ago, that a woman took over the job of postmaster in the Harbor. I had a question of her and due to my extreme egalitarian nature addressed her as Post-Mistress (Too much alliteration in Post-Person). Only to be greeted with a stream of invectives ending with "I'm nobody's mistress".

You just can't win!

Dead fawn served as reminder of cost of hunting

Mcgintee was dead wrong with his statement that "Pat has no culpability. She was unaware". Ignorance of the law is no defense! If that's his attitude to the law then it is no wonder that East Hampton Town is in dire financial straits.

That it is illegal to feed wild deer is a well known fact...at least over here in North Haven...It has come up time and time again in the local papers.

Given the headline and lead I also hope the editor of the Star sees fit to move this piece to the opinion page where it belongs. The bottom line is that this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, unbiased journalism." Jan 14, 09 3:50 PM

Another noose found hanging in the woods of Sagaponack

The northern boundary of Sagaponack is the LIRR track bed. This noose was discovered far north of that point. If I lived in Sagaponack I'd be very unhappy about this mistake!

to be more accurate, the location of this noose was in an unincorporated section of Southampton Town." Jan 28, 09 1:10 PM

Murphy dominates field in Nor Easter Biathlon

Although the "Great nor Easter" is advertised as being run in Mashashimuet Park it is apparent from pictures of the race and maps available at online racing sites that a great part of this race took place within the Long Pond Greenbelt .

This does not seem to be a compatible or appropriate use for such an ecologically fragile area!

Was permission granted by the various owners of the Greenbelt, i.e. Southampton Town, Suffolk County and the Nature Conservancy?

May I offer a small correction.

Shinnecocks are looking at benefits that come with federal recognition

True enough, but I don't see anyone on this thread using that term. A more accurate description would be aboriginal or as the Canadians refer to their "native" populations as First Nations.

The Shinnecocks may not have originated on Long Island, but they were surely among the first to arrive at the party!" Dec 23, 09 11:32 AM

Classic boat fair in Amagansett

For what it's worth ... that would be a cat ketch not a Catcatch...the term refers to a sailing rig that is a hybrid of a ketch and catboat rigs rather than a boat design. Most often I've seen this rig on sharpies but it has seen use on other hull forms.

Toxic algae bloom might be worse this year

nutbeem...I like your approach. Unfortunately the only leg that we can kick out from under these harmful algae blooms is us! (current bloom is Cochlodinium polykrikoides) Control of the weather is beyond our reach at this point and probably should remain so.

There is no single point source for all the nutrients that are pouring into the Peconic Estuary. It's coming from everywhere mentioned above including the thousands upon thousands of septic systems sited in the Peconic watershed. you'd have to either roll back the local population to levels of many decades ago or bite the bullet and spend the billions necessary to significantly reduce the nitrogen loading.

For the sake of accuracy the outfall for the Sag Harbor waste treatment plant is not in the cove. It's outside the breakwater in Shelter Island Sound.

Calcaterra loses appeal to get back on ballot

The Republicans had nothing to do with this. The Democrats tripped over their own clumsy feet....Again. The guy behind this was Ms. Calcaterra's Democratic opponent, Greg Fisher. The irony here is that Greg petitions to be put on the ballot were postmarked late!!! Ms. Calcaterra lost her appeal earlier this afternoon and Ken may well run opposed. It's just the standard Democratic Party tragedy. I think Shakespeare may have penned their game plan for this election cycle.

I am so embarrassed to be a registered Democrat right now. Fortunately Ken isn't a bad sort and, in my humble opinion, seems to line up on the "good" side of most local issues." Aug 18, 10 6:41 PM

In addition to being a spokesperson for the above mentioned "Citizens Forum" James Boyd is reported variously as either a volunteer or administrative assistant to Donald Havrilla at the Southampton Full Gospel Church.
