Shinnecock Nation explores opening tribal college at Stony Brook Southampton site

Sounds like this idea is still in its infancy....it sounds good on the surface and may be a great thing. One cannot fault the Shinnecock tribe for being ambitious. This ambitiousness is the American way. If it succeeds, all will benefit. Perhaps the most disturbing part of this article is the reminder that there exists a lawsuit in which the Shinnecocks seek to have many acres of land that is currently privately owned "awarded" to them, based on the premise that it was illegally taken from them many generations before any of us were alive. How far back do you want to take it? Perhaps we should also give lots of money to the descendants of all slaves in reparation? Then, self-righteous people can call others who are opposed to these ideas "bigots"? How about this idea? Europeans brought modern civilization to this land. Like it or not, there have been many benefits of this modernization that the Shinnecocks have taken advantage of. Maybe the Shinnecocks should continue to focus on improving what they now have and what they bring to the cultural equation, and I think they are doing that with this idea of a college. But to try to take land from people who now live here legally according to our modern laws due to a claim that it was taken by people who died 400 years ago? It is absurd and counterproductive to relations in my humble opinion. " Jun 26, 10 9:39 AM

Ballot Count Begins; Altschuler Travels To Washington

What matters most is how well the economy does over the next couple of years. We know what Bishop is like through his record of voting and his record of bringing back money to the community. Count the votes over, and let the chips fall where they may. Bishop's record is what it is, like it or not. It personally has not impressed me. As for Altschuler, who knows what he is truly like? You can't go by what he says in interviews or what his website says, since it is all political BS anyway. This election was about dissatisfaction with the current left wing ideology. Altschuler is someone who seems trustworthy on the surface, but needs real world testing. I hope he wins and gets a chance to change things back a little to the right just to balance out the system. If he doesn't satisfy, then in two years, out with him too!" Nov 7, 10 6:30 PM

Gregor, Town Board Battle Over New Leaf Pickup Program

For years the leaves have languished by the roadways in our town. Half those years, the Fall leaves were not picked up until the Spring. It has been an ugly disgraceful mess. Then at one point several years ago we were all told to make sure we didn't mix the sticks and branches with the leaves or else our piles would be bypassed...only to see a bucket loader come down the street, pick it all up and load it all into the back of the same dump truck. This program has been mismanaged for years. For some reason, our representatives will not solve the problem.. I say throw (VOTE) them ALL out, and get someone in there who will solve it. Two Southampton Schools Flagged For Improvement By State

The whole NCLB thing is a political manipulation of the public. If you think it is some kind of measure of how well the schools are doing their jobs, then you have been brainwashed. Our schools are doing a great job. I will agree however that school administration is top-heavy and over-paid. Most of the superintendents on Long Island make well over $250,000 a year, and they are mostly figureheads who do nothing more than delegate. If I would suggest an area that needs improvement, I would suggest the elimination of all local District Superintendent positions, or at least cap their pay to reflect their actual value. " Nov 28, 11 5:18 PM

The kids today are getting the same basic education that their predecessors did, except much more is expected of them. They are also held much more accountable than kids ever were before. The battery of testing they must endure is much more rigorous than their predecessors. If they fail, then official academic intervention occurs. The schools actually do try to give every student a fair chance at achievement. Part of the problem is the public perception that the schools are somehow failing. Go to a graduation ceremony at any local High School. These are great kids and fine schools." Nov 29, 11 6:08 AM

Bayman Says Shots Fired From Reservation; Shinnecocks Demand Baymen Stay Away

I, too have had the unpleasant experience of being shot at while clamming near the res...a couple of times over the years. I'm sick of the old mantra about "we've been here 10,000 years, blah, blah, blah. The fact is, I've spent a lot of time clamming those waters, and seeing a Shinnecock Indian actually digging clams is a rare event. There just are not many if any Shinnecock Indians clamming for sustenance...that is plain BS. How's this for a continuance of Lance's logic...If it weren't for us European settlers, you Indians would probably be speaking German right now... " Jul 8, 12 3:15 PM

UPDATE: Charges After Partiers Are Rescued From Sandbar

A bad situation that ended up with nobody killed... lucky. OK, but let's get a grip on the tickets for the swimmers...and one arrest? I guess someone decided someone needed to be punished? Or, are these people to be singled out and made an example of? For swimming to shore? Ask almost anyone who grew up here, how many guys jumped off the canal bridge? How many guys used to surf in the inlet back in the 70s? These days if the surf is too big, the cops wont even let you near the beach. Can you say, "Cradle to Grave Nanny State?"" Aug 27, 12 9:09 PM

The SHPD will be sure to place blockades at all the key locations where you might gain access to the beach, and will also be sure to deny you access to the ocean. And, if you even swim in the inlet you will get a ticket and possibly arrested. Feeling Free? Thanks, Nanny State!" Oct 27, 12 7:39 AM

A surfer shouldn't need to be "qualified." The problem is that it is impossible to get into the water when the storms create the best waves because our PD, prevents it at many locations. I'm sure the PD's intentions are noble, however the decision is denied to the individual, hence a loss of individual freedom, hence the term, "Nanny State." " Oct 28, 12 6:41 AM
