Remsenburg And Speonk Taxpayers Will Vote On $5.7 Million School Expansion Project Tuesday

Far from showing a school that is outmoded and overcrowded, these pictures show a school that is still a showplace which any community would be proud of. Thirteen kids spread out over a shiny-floored gym. A kitchen with modern digital warming ovens (what "has been around from 1965?" The sink?) Kids seated in front of big, flat screen monitors in a computer room with a couple of extra seats. Who is really going to benefit from the assumption of $5.7 million in additional debt by Remsenburg and Speonk? The families in the community? I know Larry Salvesen of the Patchogue firm BBS Architects & Engineers and the Garden City construction management firm Triton Construction will. Which is why they are the ones who have been hard-selling this construction more than anybody. " Dec 1, 10 5:16 PM

Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary is a wonderful school, with great kids.

I's 2010 expenditure per student for 186 students works out to $62,112 (source: NYS comptroller website).

Half a mile up Mill road is Raynor, a private school. The students who go there seem like they are getting a good education, too. Its cost per student for 133 students works out to less than $12,000 (source greatschools.org, guidestar.org)

A $50,000 difference per student per year for similar schools? That's a lot of bagels." Dec 2, 10 3:21 PM

Select "Schools" and "Level One." You get an excel spreadsheet. I divided column "AM" "Total Expenditures and Other Uses" by column "F" "Enrollment."

I know the numbers for Raynor seem low. I tried to gross it up as much as I could. I did the same calculation for a K-8 private school in the city that I am familiar with. I got $27-$37 per student. This is an NYC private school with all the trimmings. The 7th grade gets a trip to Washington, DC. The 8th grade gets a trip to Rome.

I am sympathetic to the fact that a lot of private schools have it easier because they don't and won't help special needs kids. However Little Flower is on the NYS list at $61,000 / student and *all* those kids are special needs, in a big way." Dec 2, 10 5:04 PM

So the bond was defeated 47% to 53%. Clearly the school board once again did not make its case to the community. A community that I feel really cares about the kids. The repeated attempts at expansion have taken on a flavor of high / low negotiation with the community. "hdhouse," above, had a good point when he said that "the facts are not out there."

I think that, going forward, our new school board needs to start fresh by preparing its own slides rather than relying on canned sales pitches from self-interested parties like James & Campbell and BBS.

We spent $715,000 to cut down trees and replace them with a parking lot that is left lit all night with blazing street lights which serve no purpose but to blot out the stars for the children of Remsenburg. When I was a kid, my Remsenburg neighbors and I were out in our back yards stargazing. Some of us went on to study physics and astronomy in college.

Who's purposes are being served with these projects? The kids? or the contractors and LIPA?" Dec 8, 10 5:10 PM

Looming Federal Cuts Could Impact Brookhaven National Laboratory

I am reposting without the link: In 2000 prominent Democratic fundraisers including George Soros, Alec Baldwin and Christie Brinkley encouraged Bill Clinton's secretary of energy Bill Richardson to close the troubled High Flux Beam Reactor at BNL.

This was also supported by Congressman Michael Forbes who had switched to the Democratic party. This move was criticized by the American Institute of Physics as gutting this country's capability in neutron scattering research. Now Tim Bishop is campaigning to keep the rest of BNL open. Does the Democratic party on the East End support or oppose nuclear physics at BNL? that is the question." Feb 24, 11 5:16 PM

State Closes Shellfishing In Western Shinnecock Bay After Toxin Is Detected

The additional nitrogen from new septic tanks built since then are worse then the duck farms were. This paper and Newsday have published several articles about this recently. Maybe the 70's were some kind of optimum with the duck farms in decline and the building boom yet to occur. I remember the heyday of clamming back then. We are killing the bays. Really a shame.

Study: Long Island Has $99 Billion In Property Vulnerable To Storm Surge

And the winner is...Riverhead? Whole report sounds scrambled. "Cool waters would not allow a Category 5 storm to form off the coast of New York." No hurricane can "form off the coast of New York" the water is too cold even in the summer. Hurricanes are carried north, fully formed, by high altitude winds. The south shore would bear the brunt of the storm's impact, with the area to the east of the eye having it the worst due to the addition of the storm's rapid forward motion and counter-clockwise rotation." Proposed Remsenburg Subdivision Will Be Discussed During Thursday's Planning Board Meeting

It's criminal that this land was not protected under the CPF. The price per acre was well within range of recent purchases. I also don't believe that Lawrence Citarelli and Lawrence III corp is sincere about preserving the historic structures on South Country Rd (Remsenburg Main St). He intends to carve up the property they sit on with an access road to the interior of his property. 3/4 acre lots? It's all 1 acre in this part of Remsenburg. What kind of junk development is he planning?" Jul 14, 11 9:29 AM

Then why is his opening gambit to cut a new road right into the most historic part of the Hamlet? Plus he going for a cluster subdivision with only 25% open space preservation when 50% is more typical East of the canal." Jul 14, 11 1:27 PM

By saying that the historic homes are "unlivable" are you tacitly endorsing that Larry will tear them down? Also, Larry purchased 22 acres of undivided land, which was the basis for the valuation. He is now lobbying for a major subdivision, the extent of which will determine his economic return from the deal. " Jul 14, 11 2:19 PM

Public Hearing Continues On Remsenburg Subdivision On Thursday

I'm not sure if the 20 acres * 1 home / acre = 20 homes math applies here since it is a major subdivision. The number of nonseasonal vacant homes in Southampton town almost doubled from 1,728 to 3,170 between 2000 and 2010 according to the census. The number of homes occupied year round declined 1.45% at the same time. To me these numbers indicate that new supply could just make it more difficult for those facing foreclosure to sell their homes." Aug 8, 11 2:53 PM

"The right thing" is destroying the architectural integrity of the main street of Remsenburg? The Webb house is already deteriorating far faster than when her estate was still managing it. Is this being a good neighbor?" Aug 9, 11 10:37 AM

Residents Irate Over Proposed Hangars In Westhampton

It should be kept in mind that Gabreski is potentially a major airport. If it were any closer to NYC it would be handling plenty of commercial flights already." Nov 10, 11 12:25 PM
