Bishop Appears To Win In Photo Finish; LaValle, Thiele Cruise To Victories

From Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post

"Washington - Losing elections is an occupational hazard for politicians, so there's no need to get all weepy about the Democratic officeholders who suddenly find themselves with more time to spend with their families. It would be more appropriate to shed a tear or two for the future of the country, what with the tea party brigade coming to town. Then again, I was pretty gloomy after the 1994 midterms and yet it turned out that the world did not actually end.

President Obama still has the ability to set the nation's agenda -- and also the power of the veto, in case of emergency. Harry Reid is still Senate majority leader -- and after the way he punched and scrapped his way to victory, who wants to mess with him? As for John Boehner, he'll soon learn that his new job requires a more extensive vocabulary than "no.""" Nov 5, 10 12:14 PM

Ballot Count Begins; Altschuler Travels To Washington

A quick scan of these comments and I am reminded why I stopped visiting this site. Conservatives like joe hampton, jabrones, snakeoilsalesman et al are perfect examples of how so many in this country would rather call names and insult then talk about real, positive solutions for ALL Americans.

27 East has become a haven for right wing hate and ignorance. " Nov 10, 10 12:00 PM

Tuckahoe Superintendent Would Rent District-Owned Home Following $95,000 Renovations

They're joking, right?" Dec 6, 10 10:47 AM

Why did the board set the date fit the referendum for December 21? Because a lot of people will be out of town. Doesn't the school have to absorb the cost of the vote? Yes. How much did the school already spend on architectural plans? Was this deal made before the super was hired? If teachers making $40,000/year are expected to be able to find their own housing or commute two hours why should we go out of our way to help someone making $150,000/year plus benefits? Did this $95,000 fall from the sky? No, it may be a surplus, but it is tax payer money. Who will replenish the surplus? Tax payers. If the money is not spent directly to educate our kids then it should not be spent. This is a misuse of taxpayer money. Vote no and be sure to encourage your friends to pick up absentee ballots or do it for them" Dec 6, 10 7:13 PM

With Apple's educator discount, for the same money, you could purchase an iPad for nearly every child in the school - a tool that would have a direct impact on education " Dec 11, 10 11:10 AM

Tuckahoe School Board Sticks With Referendum Plan

Mr. Dyer receives health benefits from the military. Hiring him enabled the board to save those dollars, but now they are offering to pay his rent in exchange while at the same time saying that the house will be "assed at fair market value". Who are they trying to fool?

They are, in effect, giving him extra money not part of his contract, unless, of course, they already made a promise that we do not know about, which is what I suspect. Either way, not only does this mean that the school will NOT be recouping the costs of the house, as they said, but that they will actually be paying his rent. They are trying to lie to us. Outrageous!" Dec 15, 10 3:04 PM

Yeah, let's vote - but let's do so before answering important questions and while voters are away for the holidays." Dec 17, 10 4:19 PM

There is an article on another local blog about an increase in childhood poverty in our neighborhoods (see below) and the Tuckahoe School board wants to spend $95,000.00 to build on-campus housing for a superintendent making $155,000/year plus nearly $35,000 in benefits and provide the rent as payment-in-kind? If you are not outraged by this, you need to check your pulse.

VOTE NO! Tuesday, December 21 at Tuckahoe School from 11AM to 8PM

"The U.S. Census Bureau released its annual estimate of child poverty on Wednesday and the numbers show that ever since the start of the economic bust in 2007 child poverty has been on the rise both nationally and locally.

Southampton, Bridgehampton and Tuckahoe school districts have each seen a steady rise since 2007, while wealthy Sagaponack School District has had virtually no child poverty for the past five years. Sag Harbor School District also has had a consistently low child poverty rate."" Dec 20, 10 1:16 PM

Tuckahoe School Housing Proposal Defeated

This referendum was such a bad idea. I am so pleased it was defeated. The board has awakened the ire of this community and folks will be paying much closer attention" Dec 21, 10 9:32 PM

Not only was fair market rent not defined, but the super would not have been required to pay it anyway as they were offering payment in kind. We do not need our administrators living on campus. A public school should not be a landlord. As many have pointed out, the work was already begun before the vote and I would like to know exactly how much was spent and how they intend to pay it back" Dec 22, 10 10:41 PM

Holidays Are Especially Difficult For Homeless

I must say I find it hard to be surprised by some of the things written on this site, but to see so many people attacking someone down on their luck makes me despair for our country's future. I hope this family finds peace and shelter and god bless those willing to help a fellow human in need." Dec 31, 10 12:06 PM

So correct, highhatsize, I just hope that the family does not stumble upon this site and read these comments. If you do, please know that many more of us wish you well.

Happy New Year to all and may you find it in your heart to perform an act of kindness for those less fortunate." Dec 31, 10 3:41 PM

"A lot of homeless people choose to be so. They don't want the responsibilities of working and paying bills." I find it so depressing that people like you actually have such stone-cold hearts that you are willing to say such things. I bet if you had to reveal your name you would not have the courage to spew such ignorant, hateful, clap-trap.

If caring about my fellow human makes me a "liberal" then I wear that banner proudly. Look up the word "karma", Walt. Something really awful must have happened in your life, so I hope you find happiness in the New Year so that you can stop taking your misery out on those less fortunate." Jan 1, 11 3:23 PM

Highhat, you are assuming that these hateful dittoheads actually take the time to read the article before commenting and they clearly do not. Thank you for trying to enlighten them, but it is hopeless. These people are so miserable and filled with such hate and cowardice that they cannot help but attack those less fortunate and least able to fight back." Jan 1, 11 10:50 PM

Board Will Not Review Ethics Complaint Targeting Kratoville

Once again, Mr. Wheeler, you attack but do not listen or read. The board of ethics say they see no ethics violation in appointing a failed crony without an open, transparent vetting of candidates - without even seeking qualified applicants or consulting with the Supervisor.

What you obviously do not understand is that to most thinking individuals, this is just the sort of thing the ethics board SHOULD be considering.

Again, read the article "The complaint also sought a determination on whether the appointment violated town hiring policy, which critics said required a more open process." Do you believe that this hiring process was open?

I suggest you focus your contempt and anger on those who deserve it instead of just defending them because they are fellow conservatives with teaparty ethics." Jan 5, 11 8:19 PM

Mr Wheeler, you smarmy condescension reminds me of an elementary school bully. " Jan 6, 11 6:19 PM

Thiele: East Hampton, Rest of Long Island, Short Changed In State After-School Grants

Joe Hampton, your extreme hate for the "left" leads you to post your vile rhetoric on every single article here including this one, which has absolutely nothing to do with what happened in Arizona. Philathome was wrong to bring it up, but your attempts to tie this murder to the "left" are beyond the pale and a new low even for you.

Community Reeling from Arizona Shooting

No, your 'opinion' about gun ownership is protected by the first amendment. By the way, when the second amendment was written there was no 31 round gun clip readily available. " Jan 14, 11 10:59 AM

No one is talking about outlawing guns. We need sensible REGULATION. Nobody needs an extended magazine that holds 31 bullets.

"The gun lobby's vision is guns in every corner of American society. The National Rifle Association wants guns in more American homes. It wants more guns on the streets, in grocery stores, in restaurants, in coffee houses, in bars, in churches, at workplaces, at political events, and on college campuses. Guns everywhere, to deter criminals from attacking and to shoot back when they do.

Arizona is fast becoming the quintessential realization of this vision. Arizona has virtually no restrictions on guns (the Brady Center gives it 2 points out of a possible 100 in its state law ratings) and the state recently became the third state to allow people to carry concealed weapons in public places without a permit. The state also recently allowed concealed carriers to take their guns into bars.

Have weak gun laws made Arizonans safer? The state ranks 6th in the nation in gun deaths. FBI data indicates it ranks 13th in homicides per 100,000 population. Arizona criminals don't appear to be cowering in fear of armed, law-abiding citizens. Arizona also has become a favorite source of lethal weaponry for the Mexican drug cartels. Three Arizona gun dealers are among the top 12 American dealers in supplying Mexican crime guns."" Jan 14, 11 2:08 PM

Thank you, Ice for making my point, exactly. The constitution is a living, breathing document. The founders wrote a document that was very specific to their day and, over the years, we have amended it as needed, allowing women to vote, recognizing blacks as fellow-humans, and even placing limits on free speech where it concerned personal safety.

The NRA and, apparently you, hold the second amendment as sacred, beyond reproach, absolute- yet you think it is OK to revise an amendment having to do with birthright citizenship. If the 14 Amendment is not sacrosanct, neither is the second.

Doubtful those responsible for the second Amendment would have approved of the state of violence in America today nor would they have protected and individuals right to own a weapon designed to kill as many people as possible without severe restriction." Jan 14, 11 2:14 PM

Don't blame liberals for gun control. The truth is below - I especially like the part about Ronald Reagan.

'In 1969, journalist William Safire asked Richard Nixon what he thought about gun control. "Guns are an abomination," Nixon replied. According to Safire, Nixon went on to confess that, "Free from fear of gun owners' retaliation at the polls, he favored making handguns illegal and requiring licenses for hunting rifles."

It was President George Bush, Sr. who banned the import of "assault weapons" in 1989, and promoted the view that Americans should only be allowed to own weapons suitable for "sporting purposes."

It was Governor Ronald Reagan of California who signed the Mulford Act in 1967, "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." The law was aimed at stopping the Black Panthers, but affected all gun owners.

Twenty-four years later, Reagan was still pushing gun control. "I support the Brady Bill," he said in a March 28, 1991 speech, "and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay."

One of the most aggressive gun control advocates today is Republican mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York City, whose administration sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and whose police commissioner, Howard Safir, proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly "safety" inspections.

Another Republican, New York State Governor George Pataki, on August 10, 2000, signed into law what The New York Times called "the nation’s strictest gun controls," a radical program mandating trigger locks, background checks at gun shows and "ballistic fingerprinting" of guns sold in the state. It also raised the legal age to buy a handgun to 21 and banned "assault weapons," the sale or possession of which would now be punishable by"" Jan 14, 11 2:17 PM
