East Hampton Town hopes to break ground early next month on its first subsidized housing project in nearly a decade.

The Town Board last week, after three months of delays, approved a $2.5 million bid from JNS Contracting to construct the 12 condominiums in three buildings off Accabonac Road in northern East Hampton. The condos will be sold at a below-market rates as “affordable” middle-income housing.

Councilwoman Sylvia Overby said this week that there will likely be an official groundbreaking ceremony within a couple of weeks, but that actual construction won’t get into full swing until the fall, since the designs must still be presented to the town’s Architectural Review Board before building permits can be issued.

The builders have said constructing the three manor house-style buildings, each with four condo units, will take just four to six months from the time the building permits are issued.

The town purchased the 3-acre former tennis club property at 181 Accabonac Road in 2007, for $882,000, with the intention of using it for affordable housing.

The one-, two- and three-bedroom condo units are expected to be sold to buyers chosen through a lottery for between $150,000 and $300,000 depending on their size.
