If you tried to buy one of seven sisters, even for over $16 million, you’d be arrested, or slugged by their big brother. But in Hamptons real estate, you’d be welcomed with open arms. Translation: One of the houses known as the “Seven Sisters” in Montauk is on the market with a price tag of $16,250,000. The property at 153 Deforest Road has been on the market a couple of times before in the last couple of years.

By the way, the ask could be considered something of a bargain. When last we looked, Tick Hall, another one of the Seven Sisters, was still for sale, and can be had for $62 million. Part of the allure is the eventual buyer can say he/she purchased it from longtime owner Dick Cavett.

Before getting into the particulars of 153 Deforest Road, some background on the Montauk Association Historic District and how the Seven Sisters came to be. The 100-acre district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It contains a complex of large shingle-style cottages constructed for wealthy New York City families’ summer use, designed by McKim, Meade and White within a site plan designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1881. In 1976, the district included nine buildings deemed to be contributing to the historic character of the area, and two other contributing sites. It is bounded on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Ditch Plains, and on the north and east by marsh and scrubland. The seven cottages, going by their original names, are the Agnew Cottage (1884), Benson House (1883), Sanger House (1883), Hoyt House (1883), Andrews House (1884), de Forest House (1882) and the Orr House (1883).

The property at 153 Deforest consists of 2.3 acres, and the house on it is 3 stories and 3,800 square feet, with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Enticing features include six fireplaces, a library, a second-floor veranda, plenty of room for a pool, and in that setting, breathtaking views. It first went on the market in 2016 for $18.5 million, then again last year after a price dip. If the price is now right, contact Rylan Jacka or Mark Webb at Sotheby’s International Realty.
