Martha Ann Scriven Campanella of Southampton died in her sleep on September 19, 2019. She was 79.
Born in the Bronx to Richard and Catherine Scriven, her father died when she was young and her mother worked as an art teacher. She attended Mt. St. Vincent College, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and later taught English at Roosevelt High School in the Bronx. She began to spend summers in Southampton and eventually bought a house. She married Frank Campanella (now divorced) and, with three children, they moved to Suthampton, where she became active in the Republican Club, a director of Opera of the Hamptons, a docent at the Parrish Art Museum, and painted in watercolors, carrying on a talent passed down by her mother.
She summered in Singer Island, Florida, where she played croquet and golf, was a member of the Irish American Society, and she traveled the world.
She is survived by her cousins, Margaret, Mary, Marshal and wife Grace and their three children, all of California, and cousins Susan Schriver and her daughter Noelle, both of Canada; a stepdaughter, Amy Traggianise and husband John; and grandchildren, James, Frank, Danielle, Angela and Christian. He is also survived by her best friends, Rita O’Shea, Eileen McCabe, Fran Bruns, Margaret Julian and Pat McGiven.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. Interment is at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
