“The Art of Balance: Cool Climate/Maritime Wines in a Global Context” is the heady title of a two-day event on August 5 and 6 at Stony Brook Southampton, marking the 20th anniversary of Long Island’s first wine symposium.
Hosted by the Stony Brook University Center For Wine, Food, and Culture in cooperation with the New York Wine and Grape Foundation and the Long Island Wine Council, “The Art of Balance” will bring together some of the world’s foremost wine growers, producers and marketers for two days of talks, tastings, and networking. Participants will focus on wines with the unique balance, finesse, and energy fostered by cool and maritime climate viticulture.
The current consumer trend away from high alcohol, heavily oaked wines makes this symposium especially important for wine producers, aficionados and oenophiles seeking a better understanding of the more refined wines from cool terroirs.
Speakers will include: Pascal Jolivet, Sancerre, France; Günter Künstler, Rheingau, Germany; Alessio Dorigo, Friuli Venezia-Giulia, Italy; Katia Alvarez, Rias Baixas, Spain; Steve Clifton, Santa Rita, California; Jacques Lurton, Bordeaux, France; Thomas Lazlo, Finger Lakes, New York; Eric Fry, Long Island, New York; Kurt Eckert, Frederick Wildman & Sons, Manhattan; and Paul Greico, Restaurants Hearth, Insieme; Manhattan.
August 5 will feature an evening Grand Tasting offering cool climate wines paired with local food from Long Island’s leading purveyors of fine comestibles, including: Almond, Catapano Dairy, La Cuvee Wine Bar, The Fifth Season, Foody’s, Macadam Cheese, Hampton Coffee, The Laundry, Jedediah Hawkins, Mecox Dairy, Claws on Wheels, Blue Duck Bakery, La Plage, The Ramshead Inn, Sang Lee Farms, Sunset Beach, Tierra Mar, and Vine Street Cafe.
