At The Stones (audio)

As the sky grew dark and the threat of rain mounted, a small group of paranormal investigators and enthusiasts ventured into an East End cemetery with hopes to contact and document denizens of “the other side.”

Erica Popino, lead investigator of the Holtsville-based Island Ghost Investigations, also known as IGI, and founder of the Paranormal Activity Study Team, or PAST, had planned to investigate Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays a week earlier, but inclement weather delayed her public ghost hunt until an evening in late June.

Beginning at about 8:30 p.m., and armed with flashlights, digital audio and video recorders, and infrared cameras, six ghost hunters walked along rows of tombstones attempting to document evidence of the afterlife. The group spent the evening switching between respectful silences—interrupted only when calling upon the dead—and lighter moments of social chatter, laughter, and talk of paranormal theory and real-life ghost stories among friends.

“PAST is a group of 100 people,” Ms. Popino said, explaining her paranormal social network, at the same time peering into the landscape of graves and thick darkness around her—the orange glow of Hampton Bays creeping above the horizon. “Island Ghost Investigations has nine [members]—that’s a private group,” she said, adding, “We tend to do more serious investigations.”

Clearly passionate about her work, Ms. Popino’s IGI group helps people on Long Island with their haunted homes and businesses free of charge, whether the claims turn out to be legitimate or not. But PAST is something quite different.

“We do monthly public ghost hunts,” she said during a phone call last week. Ms. Popino, a 42-year-old single mother of two, said the Hampton Bays investigation was a PAST event, adding that while she’s heard no specific claims of ghostly activity, Good Ground Cemetery is a safe outdoor area on Long Island where novices can learn without their inexperience adversely affecting a family or business in need of their services. While PAST is a social network, it’s also a learning group for “newbies”—people who are ghost enthusiasts rather than seasoned investigators, she explained, remarking, “There are a lot of thrill seekers out there.”

Ms. Popino was joined at Good Ground by two IGI members, Mike Taylor and Diane Kinstel—a couple who met during a PAST event at the Fire Island Lighthouse—as well as PAST member and Southampton resident Peggy Vetrano, Southampton ghost hunter Lars King, and his girlfriend, Jen Hershon, who was out for her first investigation.

As she readied her digital video camera in a parking lot near Good Ground, anticipating the evening ahead, Ms. Hershon said she was nervous that fear might set in. But as the investigation progressed, she appeared relaxed and fit easily with the group.

“This, to me, is a walk in the park,” the more seasoned Mr. Taylor said, explaining that of the many investigations he’s conducted, encounters with “the other side” in graveyards are generally the most benign.

“I find you don’t get scared until afterward,” Ms. Popino said, noting that in the midst of a paranormal experience she’s focused on the matters at hand. Later, she explained that showing fear while investigating is not an option. IGI seeks answers about the afterlife, but the group is also dedicated to helping comfort and reassure the haunted people who call upon them for help.

When she was young, Ms. Popino, like many in the field, had a terrifying encounter with a spirit. At age 15, she said, she awoke in the middle of the night to find what appeared to be a young man standing over her, smiling. Ms. Popino struggled unsuccessfully to move or scream, and after a brief but seemingly endless pause, the entity “vaporized.” It was her first brush with a hidden world that she’s sought to understand ever since.

“I’ve been doing this since high school,” she said, though she acknowledged that IGI has been active only since April. Ms. Popino and her colleagues were in another group for a couple of years, but after it disbanded they formed the team they have today.

In a short period of time, IGI has managed to conduct numerous investigations all over the Island. In addition, Ms. Popino and Mr. Taylor regularly appear as guests on WRCN radio’s morning show with DJs Dave and Glenn for a live segment called “Dead Time.” The DJs joined IGI shortly after they recorded their first segment. Ms. Popino was also asked by Newsday to be featured in a monthly paranormal video and recently appeared on the popular paranormal podcast “The Ghost Chronicles.”

I'm a member of the team you are referring to that is supposedly de-funct??? I don't think you should be writing false information or references about a team that has recently worked with many well known paranormal teams on Long Island and across the Eat Coast. You don't see the team you are referring to publicizing slander about another team in a public news paper do you? Very unprofessionally of this IGI team and this newspaper company to print false information.

There are a lot of quacks out there. It's good to see serious scientific attempte to explain the things that go bump in the night.
First impressions are everything, and from what I've read, these ghost investigators are on the up and up. The New England area is a wealth of hauntings just waiting to be explored. Perhaps you folks couild come down here to the Ozarks and experience the restless spooks we're dealing with here in Bentonville, AR.

Being a paranormal investigator is about researching the paranormal. Not the fame and recognition, you get out of it. We do it for the quest to become more knowledgeable. Let's us not forget that.

I am the founder of the New York Ghost Hunting Team (NYGHT).
I am a good personal friend of the group founder they speak of that DID NOT disband.
As there are numerous paranormal investigative teams here on the island, There has to be some kind of unity with ourselves.
Even though our team may be young in the paranormal field,
I have been a researcher and investigator in this field for many yrs

I am a proud member of P.A.S.T. There are many Long Island ghost groups in P.A.S.T. The group is a lot of fun and we enjoy meeting everyone from all over Long Island. I've been a member for over a year and we always have a great time. I'm glad that the word is out about our group. Kudos to Erica for bringing Paranormal Unity to Long Island.

Great Article!!!

All references to this group disbanding are gone. I may have misunderstood what was said to me, though I'm not quite sure why it's sparked such a reaction. My apologies. Print version will appear with updated info.

Thanks for reading.

Nothing bad was meant by my response,
Being in the paranormal field, you do hear alot of things that are going on in other groups, some good some bad, but knowing a little about the situation, BUT not the full details you try and work things out for a friends sake and help them in any way you can.
Thats why networking with other teams can be a GOOD thing !!

I WAS also "The Founder" of P.A.S.T. I quit due to the betrayal of "Erica" as many others are complaining about her. She burns people and uses them for her own good. This is not a spiritual path by no means. I was "belittled" several times and told her "not to reprimand me". There are no bosses and she sure wanted to be a boss.
We went out on several investigations and I stated that I did not think it was right to go out and investigate private cemeteries. For myself I stopped going.

Finally, the entire paranormal community is finding out the truth about, E.P. and IGI. You can't keep on hurting people, sabotaging, and bad mouthing other teams on Long Island. Our paranormal community here on Long Island is not that big. Word of mouth gets around. I truly feel bad for the people they've hurt. That is why this article has sparked so much reaction.

The 'truth' about E.P. and IGI? We're a hard working, dedicated group. Perhaps if you negative posters worked as hard as we do, got the word out about our field like we do, you wouldn't feel so 'emasculated'. Get your asses out there, promote your groups so you can get those investigations instead of whining about those who do work hard. And for those who feel betrayed, hurt and sabotaged...not everyone can work well with everyone else. There will always be people who feel 'left behind' when things ... more

Hampton Bays is a beautiful town and has a great history. Every year we discover more of the town's historical importance. For example, just a short walk from the church, the Prosper King house (currently in restoration) was built circa 1790 and is one of the oldest structures in Hampton Bays. It is nice to see the town also gaining recognition as a spiritual location as well, worthy of professional paranormal field work. The generations of people who lived here certainly left their spiritual footmarks ... more

Yes Diane I use to feel I should "defend" Erica too. I did allot of investigations and my goal is to help the spirits move on. That was not in her interest at all. I am a "sensitive" and fame is not what I am after.

This is not at all about being bitter. Truth be told, IGI is only 3 months old, and more than half it's members have left. They have left because of E.P.'s horrible behavior. If you're going to let articles be published about you and your group, than you have to take the criticism that comes with it. I am not defaming anyone. I am speaking the absolute truth. Anonymous-I don't know where you get your information from, but 'more than half of it's members have left' is totally false. We started with 9 members. One member was asked to leave, one member left on their own and one member is currently on leave for personal reasons. We have also added three new members.

Before you speak, get your facts straight.
Diane (Long Island)
Jul 16, 08 5:46 PM
More than half of our members left? LOL! When did this happen? You're thinking of another group.

Stop hiding "anonymous".
Michael from IGI (Farmingville)

It's funny how some people have forgotten why the 9 of us left our former group all at once.

Diane (Long Island)
Jul 16, 08 5:59 PM
My facts are straight. I can see from your inappropriate sense of humor, you care nothing about the ex-group members feelings. So, that tells me exactly what IGI stands for, (you being a member of their group, obviously). I'm not going to argue numbers with you. It's obvious no one can voice their opinion, so I choose to no longer comment. I know the truth, and apparently, so does the rest of the paranormal community on Long Island.
anonymous (long Island)
Jul 16, 08 6:09 PM
I wish nothing but the best for the 2 people that are no longer with our group. It is obvious you are bitter and want to hurt us in some way by posting here.

Whatever... "anonymous".
Michael from IGI (Farmingville)
Jul 16, 08 6:17 PM
My 'inappropriate' sense of humor is meant to show the absurdity of IGI being portrayed as cutthroat and evil. You are entitled to voice your opinion, but if you do it should be based on facts and not an emotional knee-jerk reaction.

You seem to think it brought us great joy to see members go, don't care about their feelings and that we don't wish things had been different. If you do you are wrong.

Diane (Long Island)
Jul 16, 08 8:09 PM
Wow, this is very sad. Can't believe all the hurtful things that are being said. Not all the facts or the truth is really being told. The group that broke up name was not even mentioned. That was so that group wouldn't be hurt. Seems like that group just wants to hurt IGI. Even more "EP".
Think it is time to move on folks.

Strife between groups: It's a tough situation. Unity is a good concept. But change begins at home. There are some paranormal investigators (not all thankfully) on LI that are very immature and childish. They are in this field for their own self glory and try to crush anyone who disagrees with them. Some people need to learn how to handle disagreement better.
