As the sky grew dark and the threat of rain mounted, a small group of paranormal investigators and enthusiasts ventured into an East End cemetery with hopes to contact and document denizens of “the other side.”
Erica Popino, lead investigator of the Holtsville-based Island Ghost Investigations, also known as IGI, and founder of the Paranormal Activity Study Team, or PAST, had planned to investigate Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays a week earlier, but inclement weather delayed her public ghost hunt until an evening in late June.
Beginning at about 8:30 p.m., and armed with flashlights, digital audio and video recorders, and infrared cameras, six ghost hunters walked along rows of tombstones attempting to document evidence of the afterlife. The group spent the evening switching between respectful silences—interrupted only when calling upon the dead—and lighter moments of social chatter, laughter, and talk of paranormal theory and real-life ghost stories among friends.
“PAST is a group of 100 people,” Ms. Popino said, explaining her paranormal social network, at the same time peering into the landscape of graves and thick darkness around her—the orange glow of Hampton Bays creeping above the horizon. “Island Ghost Investigations has nine [members]—that’s a private group,” she said, adding, “We tend to do more serious investigations.”
Clearly passionate about her work, Ms. Popino’s IGI group helps people on Long Island with their haunted homes and businesses free of charge, whether the claims turn out to be legitimate or not. But PAST is something quite different.
“We do monthly public ghost hunts,” she said during a phone call last week. Ms. Popino, a 42-year-old single mother of two, said the Hampton Bays investigation was a PAST event, adding that while she’s heard no specific claims of ghostly activity, Good Ground Cemetery is a safe outdoor area on Long Island where novices can learn without their inexperience adversely affecting a family or business in need of their services. While PAST is a social network, it’s also a learning group for “newbies”—people who are ghost enthusiasts rather than seasoned investigators, she explained, remarking, “There are a lot of thrill seekers out there.”
Ms. Popino was joined at Good Ground by two IGI members, Mike Taylor and Diane Kinstel—a couple who met during a PAST event at the Fire Island Lighthouse—as well as PAST member and Southampton resident Peggy Vetrano, Southampton ghost hunter Lars King, and his girlfriend, Jen Hershon, who was out for her first investigation.
As she readied her digital video camera in a parking lot near Good Ground, anticipating the evening ahead, Ms. Hershon said she was nervous that fear might set in. But as the investigation progressed, she appeared relaxed and fit easily with the group.
“This, to me, is a walk in the park,” the more seasoned Mr. Taylor said, explaining that of the many investigations he’s conducted, encounters with “the other side” in graveyards are generally the most benign.
“I find you don’t get scared until afterward,” Ms. Popino said, noting that in the midst of a paranormal experience she’s focused on the matters at hand. Later, she explained that showing fear while investigating is not an option. IGI seeks answers about the afterlife, but the group is also dedicated to helping comfort and reassure the haunted people who call upon them for help.
When she was young, Ms. Popino, like many in the field, had a terrifying encounter with a spirit. At age 15, she said, she awoke in the middle of the night to find what appeared to be a young man standing over her, smiling. Ms. Popino struggled unsuccessfully to move or scream, and after a brief but seemingly endless pause, the entity “vaporized.” It was her first brush with a hidden world that she’s sought to understand ever since.
“I’ve been doing this since high school,” she said, though she acknowledged that IGI has been active only since April. Ms. Popino and her colleagues were in another group for a couple of years, but after it disbanded they formed the team they have today.
In a short period of time, IGI has managed to conduct numerous investigations all over the Island. In addition, Ms. Popino and Mr. Taylor regularly appear as guests on WRCN radio’s morning show with DJs Dave and Glenn for a live segment called “Dead Time.” The DJs joined IGI shortly after they recorded their first segment. Ms. Popino was also asked by Newsday to be featured in a monthly paranormal video and recently appeared on the popular paranormal podcast “The Ghost Chronicles.”

First impressions are everything, and from what I've read, these ghost investigators are on the up and up. The New England area is a wealth of hauntings just waiting to be explored. Perhaps you folks couild come down here to the Ozarks and experience the restless spooks we're dealing with here in Bentonville, AR.
I am a good personal friend of the group founder they speak of that DID NOT disband.
As there are numerous paranormal investigative teams here on the island, There has to be some kind of unity with ourselves.
Even though our team may be young in the paranormal field,
I have been a researcher and investigator in this field for many yrs
(15 plus ) along with a few other expirienced members of our team, and I have seen ... more many teams come and go, but there must
be a truce within teams in order to make this a legit field of science, isnt that the reason we became investigators in the first place ?
I know that myself and the NYGHT team would like to work along with ALL teams here on the island to make this field be accepted in the scientific community.
I would like to also extend my help as a mediator between all L.I. based teams in order to make the field of investigations here on the Island ,and through out N.Y. more user friendly.
This responce was in NO WAY ,SHAPE or FORM a bad one against
Oliver, his article OR the Island Ghost Investigators. Just trying to build unity between ALL paranormal teams .
We can all learn alot from each other in this field, so lets at least try.
I welcome any responses as long as they are possitive .

Great Article!!!
Thanks for reading.
Being in the paranormal field, you do hear alot of things that are going on in other groups, some good some bad, but knowing a little about the situation, BUT not the full details you try and work things out for a friends sake and help them in any way you can.
Thats why networking with other teams can be a GOOD thing !!
We went out on several investigations and I stated that I did not think it was right to go out and investigate private cemeteries. For myself I stopped going.
This ... more person will use you...beaware!
And Darienne...we believe in your Mom. You're learning a lesson about character when people post the negative in a public forum knowing the person's children are reading.
You do not know about "bitter and being used" in no way shape or form would I ever hang out with Erica who is a very negitive soul..
What is the use in doing investigations if you have no interest in helping the souls that are stuck? Friends that know me know that I am ... more true in heart.
If you need to say something to me email mail me. Got it!
Quit your crying! What a bunch of whiners!
Any volunteers? Only virgins need apply.
Before you speak, get your facts straight.
Stop hiding "anonymous".
Whatever... "anonymous".
You seem to think it brought us great joy to see members go, don't care about their feelings and that we don't wish things had been different. If you do you are wrong.
Think it is time to move on folks.
Time to stop all this bashing.
Move on with each group, and do the best you can for the paranormal community. That is what should be going on. Not name calling, or ... more jealous remarks. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't bother saying it.
You need to move on. And get over it. You are giving the paranormal community a horrible name.
Move on, this seems worst than a soap opera.
But if this is what kind of groups we have on LI, forget it.
These negative posts are inappropriate and immature.
Not to mention unprofessional.
From what the spirits have told me there are to many negative people who are against the people in this article. From ... more what I am hearing all is not true. There seems to be many things that are not understood. Blown way out of sight. It seems that at one point you were all friends.
Many hurtful things were said and done.
I can only try to send some positive energy forward. Hope it helps.
Don't let the negative posts above turn you off to the idea. Just follow your heart.
Good Luck
I will be seeking for an answer, I am sure someone will lead me in the right direction.
The anger and negative feelings that keep flowing in some peoples hearts, will hold them back.
I hope that they can find direction and healing.
And to Oliver, the article was done wonderful.
You know I think every field is going to have its strife between groups. I have seen it in computer groups, historical groups...I think it's a part of human nature I suppose however much I may dislike it. It ... more is also only natural for people to get a bit competitive and want credit for hard work in making a discovery but the bottom line is to further our knowledge of the paranormal until it becomes a science and is no longer "paranormal" at all. That's one of the end goals at least.
Sarah: Don't let any of this steer you off. You just have to find the right group that is closest to the way you like to do things. Not every glove fits every hand but at least one will! :)
Strife between groups: It's a tough situation. I think we all run into this situation especially in this field because on one hand you want to be the first on the block to share something new and exciting with everyone else but you also realize that all of this spiritual stuff is everyone's right to share.
I was talking to one of my team members earlier today about this very thing; I believe we figured out where the lines should be drawn... When it comes ... more to things that are in the public domain - for example everyone can visit the same location and study it for known phenomena - you can't really put a lock on that. But when you have specific client relationships and your group shares intimate details amongst their constituency - that information should be kept private.
If several groups are doing similar work, the routine investigative work is not what's competitive - it's each group's unique approach to doing that work. And this is what makes all the paranormal teams (on Long Island, for example) valuable in their own right because it's a given that some will use approaches that yield more evidence in given circumstances while other methods won't work as well and will even rub people the wrong way or cause them disappointment and a feeling to place blame on others.
The rewards of discovery for this field are so immense - I mean we're talking solving the mysteries of life and death and religious belief. There are going to be huge investments of emotion put into the effort by all groups. And that is where we all get too sensitive about things because we are human and feel strongly about how things should get done.
I like what you told Sarah - each group has a different culture - a way of working. Some of the best teams are very vocal and passionate. She can certainly locate a group that has the right mix of energy, methods and personalities that will help her excel in her own journey of the soul :)
God himself does not propose to judge man until the end of his days.
Act from conviction and be indifferent to taunts and jeers. They stem from jealousy and breed negativity.
A man is what he thinks about all day long, regardless of what it may entail.
Our life is what our thoughts make it.
To look fearlessly upon life; to accept the laws of nature, not with meek resignation, but as her sons, who dare ... more to search and question; to have peace and confidence within our souls.
Public opinion is a weak tyrant, compared with our private opinion. What a man thinks of himself, that it is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate.
Happy are those who live in the dream of their own existence, and see all things in the light of their own hearts and minds; who walk by faith and hope; to whom the guiding star of sincerity shines.
Every noble work is at first impossible.
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can ... more become great.
Anyone can spread hatred, animocity, lies and negativity. But some choose to take the high road.
As Eleanor Roosevelt once stated, "Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you will be criticized anyway."
When you're been the target of false and ... more vicious accusations that are sent to your friends and team mates, or, have been threatened with law suits just because you don't accept someone's photograph or audio as evidence, that makes it very hard to sit at the same table with some people. :-(
Not to worry, all press is good press.
Nobody in IGI is out for fame and fortune. What want is to earn credibility and the opportunity to explore new places and get more interesting investigations. Is it exciting to see your name in print, or get on the radio? Of course. Who can deny that. But is that why we are working hard to put ourselves out there? Absolutely not.
Yes, we are a new group ... more and had to resolve certain issues. Didn't TAPS have personal issues with members they needed to deal with?
It's called life, and sometimes it hurts all parties involved.
As for Erica, she is not the person that is being represented in these catty remarks. She is not out to hurt people or use them for personal gain.
I have been so fortunate to find a group of people who were strangers to me that have blossomed into wonderful, caring friends.
I am truly upset about all of these accusations.
The goal of IGI is to collect paranormal evidence and help bridge that gap between this life and the next.
To other readers, please don't take these posts as bible.
It's sad to see all the fighting among the different groups. The field is boundless so if you don't get along personally with someone, move along and leave the negativity behind. Life is far too short and complicated as it is. Why add to the drama in an endeavor that is done expressly for enjoyment.
Of all the people mentioned, I only know Erica and I know that first and foremost she is dedicated to the paranormal ... more and has the utmost respect for the spirits and the places she investigates. Any personal differences anyone has with her should not be used to denigrate her paranormal work.
Put the differences aside, stop the bickering and let each group do their own thing. Go forth and investigate !!!!!
Contentment and resentment are making you appear quite spiteful and venomous.
This group seems to have a lot going for them or these few nasties wouldn't be making such a fuss. Like children on a playground kicking and screaming because ... more they didn't get their turn on the monkey bars. Go to a different playground and play there instead. You may just have fun.
In the words of Don Henley:
These times are so uncertain
There's a yearning undefined
...People filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age
The trust and self-assurance that can lead to happiness
They're the very things we kill, I guess
Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms
And the work I put between us,
Doesn't keep me warm
There are people in your life who've come and gone
They let you down and hurt your pride
Better put it all behind you; life goes on
You keep carrying around that anger, it'll eat you up inside
- the angry people... you're only hurting yourselves. Go out and enjoy life for crying out loud.
IGI (or NIGHT) or Oliver - out with it! You guys are too quiet, let us know who they are. I would like to thank them personally for amusing us all. ROFL
Am I smelling a second story or is that "dirty water dogs"?
Nice job
the sad thing is it takes a pagan to remind the christions of this
its a sad day when we feel the need to attack each other over some thing so frivelis as a hobby as far as i know no one gets payed for this so the only thing at stake here is your own ego so why not redirect your energy to something more produtive like helping the homeless or giving blood, volintering at your local fire depotment or maybe at an old age home
