Well, if you survived the traffic this past weekend, the summer will be a breeze. What a nightmare. Remember to shop during the week for the rest of the summer.

This Saturday, the Boys Harbor fireworks show will be held as part of a fund-raising event at the Duke estate on Three Mile Harbor called Rock the Harbor. The rain date is Sunday, July 13. The show can be seen from around Three Mile Harbor but if you want to attend the fund-raiser and see the show up close, go to www.RockTheHamptons.org for information.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church has announced that the Reverend Rob Gillion, a priest serving in two London parishes, will be returning to St. Luke’s this summer. He won’t give a performance this year, as he did last, but will be offering comments and telling stories during services. He also will preach during the July 13 and July 20 services at 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s. The Rev. Gillion was a professional actor before ordination and has endeared himself to millions of BBC-TV viewers in a variety of shows, including the Terry Wogan show. He also has performed in Hong Kong, New York and Switzerland in a special outreach ministry. On Sunday, July 13, at 4 p.m., Rob and his wife, Janine, will share snippets of their ministry and life after which all are invited to gather on the church lawn for refreshments.

Matthew Rubenstein of East Hampton recently graduated from the College of William and Mary. Congratulations, Matthew!

This is the season for fund-raisers and benefits, so everyone should get their wallets out.

The Box Auction, a fund-raiser for East End Hospice, will take place this Saturday, July 12, at 4:30 p.m. at the Ross School Lower Campus on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton. There is a very long list of East Hampton artists who designed fantastic boxes to be auctioned to help raise money for this organization.

I did one as did Abby Abrams, Mary Antczak and Bill Kiriazis, Marilyn Church, James DeMartis, Eric Fischl, Connie Fox, David Geiser, April Gornik, Elaine Grove, William Heppenheimer, Leif Hope, William King, Dennis Leri, Gabriele T. Raccke, Stephanie Reit, Randall Rosenthal and Lewis Zacks. This is just a short list, please forgive me for the East Hampton artists’ names that I overlooked. There will be a total of 100 boxes up for auction. It is a fun event and a good cause.

The Fighting Chance Summer Gala is also on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. It will be at the Maidstone Club tennis house in East Hampton. Tickets are required and may be purchased in advance for $400, $800 or $1,500 by contacting Heather Matthews, Fighting Chance, at 725-4646.

On Saturday at 8 p.m., Guild Hall will present comedian Judy Gold, who will be performing off-site at The Jewish Center of the Hamptons. Tickets are $40 or $35 for members of Guild Hall and the Jewish Center. You can call Guild Hall at 324-0806 to purchase tickets.

Judy Gold is an American stand-up comedian and actress. She won two daytime Emmy awards for her work as a writer and producer on the Rosie O’Donnell Show. She has also been involved in many projects including the television series “All American Girl” and “HBO At the Multiplex” segments, in which she asks humorous questions of moviegoers.

The 2008 Great Chefs Dinner brings culinary geniuses together to celebrate and honor Jeff Salaway’s legacy. He was the widely respected and beloved East Hampton restaurateur and a founder of Nick & Toni’s. The fourth annual event, which is the primary fund-raiser for The Hayground School, will be held on Sunday, July 13, at Nick & Toni’s, in a festive tent outside the restaurant.

The extraordinary culinary affair features the prodigious talents of some of the hottest chefs in New York City and the Hamptons along with fine wine, live music, an auction and a raffle. The Great Chefs Dinner will benefit The Hayground Jeff Salaway Scholarship Fund and Jeff’s Kitchen, as well as mark the 20th anniversary of Nick & Toni’s.

The event begins at 6 p.m., with cocktails and food stations offering an array of the chefs’ signature dishes, and the area’s top sommeliers, under the direction of wine expert Joe Watson, who will be pouring local and international wines. Dinner will be followed by dancing to live music by Karlus Trapp. There will be appearances and book signings by noted food writers, displays of specialty foods and culinary tools and products, an auction and a raffle. Tickets for the tent event are $350 per person. For tickets and further information, visit www.greatchefs.org or call 537-7068.

On Tuesday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m., Guild Hall continues the Janus Film series with “Shoot the Piano Player” by one of my favorite directors, François Truffaut.

Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy, “Shoot the Piano Player” relates the adventures of mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns, clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American gangster film is pure nouvelle vague. The film is French with English subtitles. You can visit www.guildhall.org for more events happening there.
