Bonac Tonic’s art show last weekend at Ashawagh Hall was a smashing success. The show, titled “2 Legit 2 Quit,” was well attended and there were a few sales. The artists held a raffle with the winner getting to choose a piece of art in the show. The winner was Jasmine Malone and she picked a piece from artist Don Porcella.
The biggest hit of the night, in my opinion, was the food that was served by chef Cassandra Ellis. Corned beef and cabbage plus an assortment of hors d’oeuvres filled many a belly that night.
Coming to Ashawagh Hall this weekend will be a solo show by artist Haim Mizrahi called “Begetting.” He will be showing about 40 pieces including paintings, collages and mixed media. The opening reception, which will include a jazz band performance, is Saturday, March 21, from 4 to 9 p.m.
The next day, Sunday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m., there will be a poetry reading by local poets. It should be an interesting show as Haim is an interesting guy. Besides his art and house painting business he is also the host of the LTV morning show “Hello, Hello East End.” For more information, call 329-0055.
Drucilla Raley of Springs has recently retired after 10 years as a research and planning assistant with Land Planning Services in Wainscott.
Laurie Wiltshire, the company’s president, said that she “has been a loyal and effective employee at Land Planning Services for many years. Our co-workers, clients and subcontractors, as well as the people at Town Hall, will all miss her energy and good-will. Lucky for us, when she is not off in Florida or at Gurneys she will be consulting for LPS on an as needed basis and help to complete our website.”
Ms. Raley will continue as coordinator for the Springs Community Food Pantry at the Springs Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evenings. According to Ms. Raley, “volunteers, and both food and cash donations are greatly needed.”
Springs musicians Jane Hastay and husband Peter Martin Weiss will be performing this weekend at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House at 977 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike (across the street from Ziggy’s restaurant). They will be performing with vocalist Toby Altman in a show titled “Up Jumped Spring.” Jane will be on the piano and Peter will play both bass and guitar. The show is Saturday, March 21, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, and reservations can be made by calling 332-2550.
The Empty Bowls fund-raiser held at the Springs Firehouse was a success. It was sponsored by Project MOST, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping schoolchildren. They are raising money for the Seedling Project, which is an effort to plant a garden and build a kitchen at the Springs School. The idea is to get the kids involved in growing the food themselves, basically offering an opportunity to teach life skills such as gardening and cooking. If you would like to help, send a check made out to Project MOST, write “Seedling Project” on the memo line, and send it to P.O. Box 1486, East Hampton, NY 11937.
The Springs Improvement Society sold the old Ashawagh Hall sign for $500; thanks Irwin Levy. The Springs Library wants to remind everyone that it’s time to pay the annual dues—I’ll pay up this week, I swear—and that they have a great selection of used books for sale upstairs.
The Springs writing workshop is meeting again on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. It is open to anyone. If you wish to join us, call me at my above numbers. And don’t forget the Springs Fire Department is looking for volunteers.
