The Village Cheese Shop, a staple of Southampton Village’s Main Street, is changing hands on Thursday, April 30.
The family that has run the business for 35 years is passing the keys to new owners who are planning slight changes to the name and look of the gourmet specialty shop.
“It’s going to remain very similar, and the people buying it are two local fellas,” owner Adam Batcheller said Tuesday. He wouldn’t reveal the identity of the new owners, saying he’ll let them make themselves known when they are ready.
Though rumors have persisted in the village for about a month that The Village Cheese Shop was being sold, Mr. Batcheller said he only signed the papers on Monday.
“I was very hesitant,” he said. “It’s been in my family for so long. I was hoping that the economy would turn. And it’s getting busier—but it’s going to take a lot more time to get there.”
Mr. Batcheller, a resident of Tuckahoe, will hold onto his second cheese shop, in Mattituck, which he opened in 2001.
The Southampton cheese shop has been open since 1974, when Mr. Batcheller was 14 years old.
“It’s just time for a change,” he said. “This economy exacerbated the whole ordeal.”
Letting go of the business will certainly leave a void in his life, he admitted.
“The village has been very good to me,” he said. “I have no complaints. ... My life is moving on to something new and different.”
