Most of the upperclassmen for the Hampton Bays girls track team was missing from the Marvin Goldberg Relays at Shoreham/Wading River High School on Saturday afternoon due to the prom going on that night.
But that didn’t stop the underclassmen from performing well as the Lady Baymen had multiple first place finishes at the event. This was after the girls had lost 95-55 at Mercy on Thursday.
The 4x800-meter team of freshmen Sarah Reed, Alyssya Bowen, Stefani Joslin and sophomore Priscila Quiroz placed first in 11:07 while the 4x400-meter team of freshmen Nicole Gunther, Sandra Cuccia, Elle Tretola and Binela Briatovic also placed first in 4:48. The 3x100-meter hurdles trio of Briatovic and freshmen Theresa Carey and Taylor Jayne placed first in 63 seconds.
The Lady Baymen also had a good amount of second place finishes with some notables being the 4x1,600-meter relay team of Bowen, Quiroz, Cuccia and Reed, which finished in 25:19. The medley relay team of Joslin and Jayne along with fellow freshmen Sam Fagereng and Taylor Diffley also placed second in 5:12.
Hampton Bays head coach Dave Oakley was very pleased with the way the freshmen stepped up at the relays.
“They competed with the other varsity teams that were there and were right with them all,” he said. “Mercy, Port Jefferson, you now, there were some top teams there and they were right there with them.”
Against Mercy, Hampton Bays had a handful of girls place first. Junior Caitlin Diffley won the 100-meter hurdles in 19 seconds and junior Melissa Gregory took first in the 800-meter run with a finish in 2:36.8.
Reed took first place in both the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter runs. She finished in 5:33.4 in the 1,500 and 12:34 in the 3,000. Sophomore Kory Kingsley won the discus with a throw of 76 feet.
Quiroz placed second in the race walk in 8:54 and Hampton Bays junior April Bennett placed second in the high jump with a career best 4-foot-9-inch leap as junior Meagan Gunther placed third with a 4-foot-8-inch jump.
The Hampton Bays track teams got word last week that the new track will not be ready in time for the rest of the dual meet season. For that reason, there will be a tri-meet at Southampton High School on Thursday between the Lady Baymen, Babylon and Ross/Shelter Island/Pierson at 4:15 p.m. Hampton Bays will then close out its season at Wyandanch on Monday, May 11, at 4:30 p.m.
