In the late-breaking news department, this just in: The marvelous music makers of the Quogue Elementary School will present their annual Spring Concert today, Thursday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m.

The concert will feature students in all grades singing, dancing, and playing instruments. The program looks like this: the pre-kindergarten, first and second grades will each sing a spirited song to open the show; next up will be the third grade Recorder Ensemble; and then the fourth through sixth grade and fifth and sixth grade Band, Chamber Choir, and fourth through sixth grade Chorus will take the stage.

Song selections include “Happiness Runs,” “With a Smile and a Song,” “Jubilate Deo,” and “Blue Skies,” among others. Everyone in the community is invited to come out and support these talented students.

Olé! On June 9, Senora Phillips will be taking the sixth grade class to Meson Olé in Southampton for the annual authentic Mexican repast: ordered, delivered and devoured entirely in Spanish.

The Quogue School Field Day is scheduled for next week, on Thursday, June 11. Correcting last week’s column, June 23 is the date for this year’s Beach Day. Lask week’s At Quaquanantuck did have the correct date for the sixth grade graduation, June 25; and school definitely lets out for the summer on June 26.

Another definite is the date of the Quogue School PTA Chicken Dinner, which will be held a week from Friday, on June 12. This fabulous affair at the school, which runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. is one of the great parties of the year, featuring as it does good food, great company, music, games for children of all ages, and the highly regarded and locally renowned ice cream sundae station.

There will also be a raffle once again, with prizes ranging from gift certificates from local restaurants to private wine tastings to all sorts of donated items from local merchants. Contact any member of the PTA or write to Quogue School PTA, P.O. Box 1491, Quogue, NY 11959 to make reservations or inquire about sponsorship opportunities.

The Quogue Association is sponsoring an information session on a topic near and dear to everyone’s heart, beach erosion, on Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m. at the Village Hall. The featured speakers will be two professors, Henry Bokuniewicz and Jay Tanski, both of whom are associated with SUNY Stony Brook and other organizations and have studied and written extensively on matters affecting the south shore beaches.

If this is June, it must be time for the Strawberry Moon Night Hike at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. This year’s approximately 90-minute installment, for adults and families with children over 11, is scheduled on the night of the full moon, Saturday, June 6, at 8:30 p.m.

Strawberry Moon hikers will enjoy a nighttime hike through the forest up to North Pond, looking and listening for nocturnal creatures while enjoying some night vision activities. Reservations are required 24 hours prior (653-4771) and space is limited. The hike costs $5, although it is offered free to QWR members.

Then, on Wednesday, June 10, at 7:30 p.m. the Refuge will present “Marine Ecosystems of the Northeast.” All are invited to this free program for adults, which will feature Matt Parsons of Living Art Aquariums talking about all the creatures that live under the surface of the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. Reservations are also required for this program; call 653-4771.

At the Quogue Library, there are $7 yoga for adults classes offered on Fridays from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. and $10 quilting classes offered on the same day at 3 p.m. Saturday has bridge lessons from 10 a.m. to noon and a French conversation group that meets at 3 p.m.

On Sunday, June 7, the Quogue Library Book Discussion group will meet at 2 p.m. to discuss “The Defining Moment” by Jonathan Alter. There might still be a copy or two available at the front desk.

The June exhibition at the library is “A Celebration of Quogue and East Quogue Photographers,” with an opening reception slated for Saturday, June 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. The exhibition features the work of gifted amateurs and celebrated professionals who walk among us as acquaintances, friends and neighbors.
