It does not get much better than this: writing my column in my garden, the sunshine warm on my shoulders, the sweet sounds of the birds in the trees, and my collie puppy curled up at my feet!

I so enjoyed seeing all the magnificent photographs on display at the Quogue Library’s June art exhibit and, at the reception that was held last Saturday at the library, I loved speaking with some of the Quogue and East Quogue photographers. It was truly exciting to see so many familiar names on the bottom of the photographs!

While I was visiting the library, I bought tickets for the wonderful “Conversations with the Author” series. Each Sunday lecture is followed by a book signing and reception.

Molly Haskell, author of “Frankly, My Dear: Gone with the Wind Revisited,” will be there on July 5. Kenneth Roman, author of “The King of Madison Avenue: David Ogilvy and the Making of Modern Advertising,” will be lecturing on July 12. Marie Brenner, author of “Apples and Oranges: My Brother and Me, Lost and Found,” will be making an appearance on July 19. Barton Gellman, author of “Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency,” will speak on July 26. On August 2, Carol Sue Gershman, author of “The Jewish Lady, The Black Man and the Road Trip,” will lecture. And to wrap up the series, Michael J. Fox, author of “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist,” will be there on August 9.

All lectures begin at 5 p.m. and tickets are only $10 each. For information call 653-4224, ext. 4.

Congratulations to Tim and Melissa Carolan of Merrimack, New Hampshire, on the birth of their daughter, Ella Rose. Sweet baby Ella was born on June 10. Her very proud great-grandparents are Shirley and Bud Lutz of Vail Avenue, and Nana Carla Carolan of Post Crossing. They have no doubt that little Ella will love visiting East Quogue and learning all about her family’s part in its rich history.

Phyllis and Charlie Brooks of Fairline Drive celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last Wednesday, June 10, with a surprise party attended by many family and friends. The dinner party was hosted by their daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ken Carter, at the always delicious Villa Tuscano in Hampton Bays. May Phyllis and Charlie celebrate many more “happy anniversaries,” and may their lives be filled with love, health and happiness!

Congratulations to all of our East Quogue college scholars who were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at SUNY at New Paltz: senior and theatre arts major Kristen Alestra; sophomore and adolescence education and earth science major Lauren Ciuzio; junior and theatre arts major Shari Griswold; junior and English major Morgan Lonnie; and senior and finance major Lauren Tonnesen.

Once again, our young thespians did it! Last Sunday, Rob Tureski and Christian Thienel won a Teeny Award for Lead Actor in a Drama and Supporting Actor in a Drama, respectively, for their performances in Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Lost in Yonkers” that was performed at Westhampton Beach High School. Congratulations.

The Vajravarahi Meditation Center in Hampton Bays is holding an exciting concert at our East Quogue United Methodist Church this Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Jazz and classical guitarist Herb Levine, who has played at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and who also happens to be the organist at the church, will be performing, as will bassist Stan Wright, a private music instructor from Riverhead. Also featured will be an opera singer, a jazz and blues singer, and mimes from New York City.

Chances will be sold at the fund-raiser and the prizes are fantastic: a lunch cruise on a sailboat in Sag Harbor; an overnight stay at Sassafras Cottage, a bed and breakfast in Hampton Bays; brunch for two at Villa Tuscano; and a $25 gift certificate from the New Moon Café. Tickets are $20 and will be sold at the door.

The Father Joseph Slomski Council of the Knights of Columbus will hold its sixth annual car wash fund-raiser on Saturday, June 27, from 1 to 6:30 p.m., in front of the Westhampton Beach Middle School on Mill Road. All proceeds will benefit the Community Food Pantry, Maureen’s Haven homeless shelter and several charitable activities. It is a rain or shine event and the cost is $10 per car.
