A 27-year-old man was arrested Saturday evening after he hit a bicyclist with his car in Hampton Bays and fled the scene.
Southampton Town Police arrested Robert Udle of Lake Grove on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays at 5:34 p.m. and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident involving physical injury, a felony, and reckless driving, a misdemeanor.
Town Police responded to a call of a man lying on the side of the road, near the intersection of Shinnecock Road and Ponquogue Avenue. A witness to the accident took down Mr. Udle’s license plate number and he was stopped several minutes later by New York State Police and turned over to Town Police.
The bicyclist, identified as Muhamod Cukaj of Hampton Bays, was transported by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
According to the police report, Mr. Udle told officers that “the guy on the bike” drove in front of him and, after hitting the victim, Mr. Udle got scared and drove away. Police said Mr. Udle had left Neptune Beach Club on Dune Road in Hampton Bays just prior to the accident, though they said alcohol was not a contributing factor.
Mr. Udle was transported to police headquarters for processing. His arraignment information was not immediately available.
