Wanted: One small, Asian child. Must look 4 years old and not be afraid of large crowds, bright lights, fake helicopters and tumultuous applause.
Gateway Playhouse is on the lookout for an Asian child—male or female—to play the part of Tam in the upcoming production of “Miss Saigon,” which opens on July 8 at the Patchogue Theatre for Performing Arts. Gateway Casting Director Robin Joy Allan said that all the leads for the show have been cast, but the company is sorely lacking a convincing Asian child actor.
“We’ve got lots of people who want their child to be in the show,” Ms. Allan said. “But, unfortunately, none really fit the bill.”
Ms. Allan noted that the part is not a speaking or singing role. The candidate simply has to look like a 4-year-old Asian or Eurasian child. Also required of the young thespian are a strong stage presence and the discipline and availability to deal with rigorous rehearsal and performance schedules. Ms. Allan noted that the child actor would not have to attend all rehearsals, but would have to show up for every performance.
Rehearsals for “Miss Saigon” began on June 23 and the show runs from Wednesday, July 8, through Saturday, July 25. Rehearsals will be held at Gateway’s main production studios in Bellport.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for a child who is interested in learning about theater in the professional arena,” Ms. Allan said. “He or she will be able to work with Broadway performers in a professional setting as well as gain theater credits, experience and also contacts with theater industry professionals.”
