A large glowing orange orb has been witnessed in the sky over Southampton this week, prompting lots of head scratching and questions of “What is that?” Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the orb is actually the sun, prompting people to resort to a flurry of activities such as bike riding, walking, going to the beach and barbecuing. Thermonuclear radiation has never felt so good.
The Southampton Historical Museum will host its annual Halsey House Gala on Saturday, July 4, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Thomas Halsey Homestead, 249 South Main Street. The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, colonial re-enactors, music, drink, local writers, a silent auction and a groaning board of sweet treats. Tickets are $125 in advance and $150 at the door. The Southampton Hospital Foundation’s 51st annual summer party titled “A Centennial Celebration” will be held on Saturday, August 1, under the tents on Wickapogue Road. Christie Brinkley will serve as honorary chair for this year’s event and the evening will benefit the hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
Attendees will dance to the music of Alex Donner under a huge tent decorated by Steven Stolman and Tony Urrutia, and enjoy an elegant catered dinner by Robbins Wolfe Eventeurs. Also featured will be the popular silent auction and a raffle of trips and prizes.
According to Southampton Hospital President and CEO Robert S. Chaloner, “This year’s event takes place during a milestone year in which we are celebrating the hospital’s centennial. The generosity of the community throughout our first 100 years has been steadfast, providing for significant growth and technological advancement and enabling the hospital to provide first-class health care to residents and visitors.”

Worcester Polytechnic Institute has named Felipe Polido, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fabio E. Polido to the dean’s list for the spring semester. Felipe is a sophomore majoring in robotics engineering.
Silvino Ruiz was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh.

The Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library will present a talk by Ken Dorph titled “Seven Keys to Understanding the Arab Middle East,” on Monday, July 6, at 7 p.m. Mr. Dorph, a former Fulbright Scholar, is fluent in Arabic and has lived, studied and worked throughout the Arab and Muslim worlds. The lecture is free and reservations are recommended.
Seniors are invited to join professional dancer and teacher Doris Dunn for six sessions of intermediate tap dancing, beginning on Monday, July 6, or beginning tap, starting on Tuesday, July 7. Both classes run from noon to 1 p.m. The fee for either class is $30.
Chair yoga with Mary Sammon, a certified Kripalu yoga instructor, will be held for seven Tuesdays beginning on July 7. Participants can choose either a 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. class. Advance registration is required and the fee for either session is $40.
Opera of the Hamptons, in collaboration with the library, will present an introduction to Giacomo Puccini’s “La Bohème” on Wednesday, July 8, at noon. Guests include Opera of the Hamptons Musical Director Atarah Hazzan and soprano Kristin Elena Sampson. Reservations are required.
