Did you know that there is a Long Island-based company that makes and sells vegan marshmallows? Sweet & Sara, whose headquarters are in Long Island City, makes Marshmallow Meltaways that are 100 percent vegan.

Regular marshmallows have gelatin in them, which is made from animals. Marshmallow Meltaways use other ingredients to bind them together. The ingredients in the vegan marshmallows are cane sugar, water, corn syrup, carrageenan, cornstarch, pure vanilla extract, locust bean gum, soy protein hydrolysate, organic confectioner’s sugar and sea salt. Regular marshmallows contain corn syrup, sugar, dextrose, modified cornstarch, water, gelatin, a whipping aid too long to spell, and artificial flavor and color (Blue 1).

Not that I have ANYTHING against a regular marshmallow, but if you are a true vegetarian or vegan, there is something you can bring to your next BBQ. Why miss out on S’mores when you don’t have to?

I saw the Marshmallow Meltaways the other night for the first time out at the fire pit in the backyard. They look a lot like squares of tofu. I didn’t try one but those who did said they taste good ... just like a regular marshmallow. They fall off the stick and into the fire, too, just like regular marshmallows!

So there you go. Check out the Sweet & Sara website at sweetandsara.com. They offer other vegan stuff and they will ship it to you!

Congratulations to David Fieldman and Elisabeth Carter who were married on Sunday, July 5, at the Lamb’s Chapel in Center Moriches. The bride is the daughter of William and Penny Carter and the groom is the son of Mark and Debbie Fieldman. The maids of honor were Rebecca Carter and Bettina Munnell. Best men were Kevin Fieldman and Scott Jankowski. The Reverend Michael Jankowski officiated at the ceremony. A special song for the occasion was performed beautifully by Brynn Lettieri on piano and Rebecca Carter and William Carter did the singing.

It was a perfect day for a wedding. Following the ceremony, the bride and groom rode off on David’s motorcycle. A “Just Married” sign hung off the back of the bike. Liz hitched up her wedding gown (she had white capris and a garter under her dress!) and off they rode followed by hundreds of bubbles. The bride’s helmet was covered in ivory silk. What a way to go!

A reception followed at the J.W. Masury Estate in Center Moriches. The couple will make their home in Westhampton Beach.
