What a glorious Fourth of July weekend we had! And what a charming little hamlet we all live in! Many thanks go to all of our shop keepers and members of the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce and East Quogue Beautification Committee for the colorful plantings and lush hanging baskets that so beautifully adorn our quaint Main Street.

It is with great sadness that I write of the passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Fox Overton. To me, Betty personified the word “lady.” She lived her life to the fullest and cared deeply about East Quogue. I will miss her soft smile. A memorial service for Betty will be held this Saturday, July 11, starting at 11 a.m., at the East Quogue United Methodist Church.

Prompted by his love of our little hamlet, East Quogue’s very own Bill Wright is running for a seat on the Southampton Town Board. Bill was born and raised in Southampton and has lived in East Quogue for the past three years. Bill currently serves as vice president of the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce.

Congratulations to Ryan Immesberger and Deborah Sheehan who graduated in May from SUNY at Albany. Ryan received his bachelor of arts degree in geography, and Deborah received her bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Michelle Dunn has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Congratulations!

Be sure to check your mailboxes this week. The tickets for the East Quogue Historical Society’s annual raffle should be arriving shortly. And I can tell you that the prizes are fantastic!

First prize is a magnificent quilt that was hand made by Carol Floege and valued at $1,500. Second prize is a beautiful framed photograph of Alcotts Pond that was taken by Lola Grieco. There is also a lovely framed cross-stitch by Carol Floege and a $50 gift certificate for the New Moon Café.

Please support your local historical society. Our members work very hard to preserve the rich history of our hamlet for future generations. Just in case you do not receive your tickets in the mail, please contact Carol Combes at 653-5306 or ccombes@optonline.net.
