Main Street was hopping Saturday night. Thousands of people, including those of us lucky enough to catch Jakob Dylan and his band, The Wallflowers, at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, took in the fantastic fireworks show put on by the country club.
The weather earlier in the day was perfect for grilling, sunbathing and taking that long awaited dip in the pool. The Fourth of July certainly made up for the terrible weather that we had to tolerate for nearly all of June. Here is to hoping (and wishing) for more of the same through Labor Day.
We are now getting into full-swing in terms of festivities. Enjoy!
The Westhampton Beach Village Green Concert Series continues today, Thursday, July 9, with a performance by The Isotope Stompers. The concerts are sponsored by the Westhampton Cultural Consortium and are offered every Thursday evening at the Village Green, which is located on the northeast corner of Main Street and Mill Road, near the gazebo.
The rest of the Thursday evening concert schedule is as follows: the Long Island Brass Guild on July 16; Caroline Doctorow on July 23; the Sound Symphony on July 30; the Swingtime Big Band on August 6; the Merry Makers Steel Band on August 13; Mary Mancini and Mario Tacca on August 20; and the Atlantic Wind Symphony on August 27.
All of the concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. If it rains, the venue will be moved to the Westhampton Beach High School auditorium. As always, there is no charge to attend, thanks to the folks with the Westhampton Cultural Consortium. Remember to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to share while enjoying some live music.
A reception will be held for local artist Elizabeth Duerschmidt this Friday, July 10, at 6 p.m. at Palmer Vineyards in Riverhead. Her “Big and Bold” exhibit will be on display at the vineyard through August 31.
New York State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will be the guest speaker at the Hampton Synagogue on Saturday, July 11, during Shabbat morning services that begin at 8:45 a.m. This will mark the first speech the senator has given at a synagogue since her appointment in January. Call 288-0534, ext. 10, for more information.
The ninth annual Box Art Auction benefiting East End Hospice will be held on Saturday, July 11, at the Ross School Wellness Center in East Hampton. Admission is $60 per person. Call 288-7080 or visit EEH.org for more details.
Also, Family Counseling Services will be holding its annual Summer Gala on Saturday, July 11, from 7 to 11 p.m., on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach. Tickets are $250 each and include cocktails, dinner provided by Starr Boggs and live music from the Hank Lane Band. For tickets, call 288-1954, ext. 249, or visit familycounselingsvc.org.
Starr Boggs will be hosting a series of art exhibits at his restaurant on Parlato Drive this summer. First up will be East Quogue resident Bruno Gaget whose photographs have graced a number of international fashion magazines. His exhibit, which is titled “Storm” because it captures images of a recent storm at sunset on Long Island, will open on Sunday, July 12, at 8 p.m.
Southampton resident Sheila Isham’s paintings will be featured starting on Sunday, July 19, at 8 p.m. Her works have been exhibited around the world and have been recognized for their excellence and artistic depth. The series of openings and upcoming exhibitions are being organized by Nancy Price, who has owned several galleries throughout the Northeast, and will continue throughout the summer.
For fans of the written word, not to mention those looking for tips to help slow down Father Time, Dr. Alexander J. Covey will discuss and sign copies of his book, “Ageless Beauty: An Insider’s Guide to Alternatives to Plastic Surgery,” on Saturday, July 11, at 7 p.m., at The Open Book on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. Call 878-9200 to register.
The summer is now in full swing and with it comes St. Mark’s Episcopal Church’s annual Summer Fair, which will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The church, which is located on Main Street in Westhampton Beach, will be selling crafts, raffles, games, plants and more. A flat-screen television will also be raffled. Call 288-2111 for more information.
As always, the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center has a few events scheduled this week. First, singer Phoebe Snow will perform on Sunday, July 12, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $45, $60 and $75.
The PAC will also screen “Serphine” from Tuesday, July 14, through Thursday, July 16. Both screenings will begin at 8 p.m. Andrew Botsford, the associate editor of The Southampton Press and the editor of its Arts & Living section, will introduce the films each Tuesday and lead an informal discussion following the showings as part of the PAC’s “Tuesday Night with the Movie Guy.” Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens, and $3 for Film Society members.
