In a deal involving Republican and Conservative party leaders last week, Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot seemed to get a second wind in her bid for reelection, winning back the Republican nomination after a bitter defeat at the party’s May convention, and scooping up the Conservative nod as well.
But then the deal that appeared to unite the GOP ticket and boost Ms. Kabot’s chances against rival Anna Throne-Holst in the general election fell apart, leaving the GOP fractured and Ms. Kabot regretful that she had agreed to the maneuver in the first place.
Late Friday, the Southampton Town Conservative Party announced that it would not award a nomination to any candidate for supervisor. Instead, the committee will leave that line on the November ballot blank. Ed Walsh, the party’s county chairman, had pledged last week that Ms. Kabot would be the party’s pick.
Now, instead of heading into the general election with both parties behind her, Ms. Kabot’s name will appear only on the GOP line—which may prove to be a disadvantage, as Ms. Throne-Holst, who is unaffiliated with a party, has secured three lines by winning the endorsement of the Democratic, Working Families and Independence parties.
In response to these latest developments, Ms. Kabot said she is reinstating primary challenges against the Republican committee seats held by Marcus Stinchi, the town’s GOP chairman, and Patrick Heaney, former town supervisor—challenges she agreed to back off from in return for the party’s nomination. As part of that deal, according to Ms. Kabot, Jim Malone, the GOP committee’s choice for supervisor and leader of the town’s Conservative Party, dropped his bid for supervisor and opted to run for a seat on the Town Board, presumably giving the supervisor the nominations of both parties.
Angered by what she labeled as a “betrayal,” Ms. Kabot has reignited her efforts to change the Republican Party’s leadership at its reorganization meeting in September.
“There is an absolute need to shake up the Republican leadership in this town,” Ms. Kabot said. “This type of political treachery must stop. Let the people decide who is truly working in the public’s interest and who is really a political operative skilled in deception and manipulation.”
Responding to the town Conservative Party’s decision last week, Mr. Walsh said he thought it would have been better to show a united front, but ultimately the decision was the town committee’s to make.
In a statement issued Friday evening, Ms. Kabot said she now believes it would have been better to run her planned Republican primary against Mr. Malone, rather than experience the “betrayal of trust that occurred over the course of the past few days.”
On July 20, Ms. Kabot announced that she had secured the designation for the Republican and Conservative lines in the November 3 general election. Mr. Malone had agreed to instead accept a position on the two parties’ tickets for one of two Town Board seats. William Wright, who had earned the Republican nomination for one of the two available board seats at the May convention, agreed to decline the nomination to make room for Mr. Malone.
According to Ms. Kabot, Mr. Malone did not tell her about the Conservative Party’s decision on Friday, nor had he returned numerous phone calls and e-mails meant to coordinate with him to file the necessary paperwork with the Suffolk County Board of Elections.
“Trust, honesty and communication are key to ensure teamwork and a united front,” said Ms. Kabot, who will still share the Republican Party ticket with Mr. Malone and Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi, who is seeking reelection.
Mr. Stinchi, responding to the latest controversy in an e-mail Tuesday, dismissed Ms. Kabot’s challenges, and said he serves as GOP chairman “at the pleasure of the entire committee.” He added that he has not decided whether to seek another term as the Republican leader.
“If the committee wants to move in a different direction, that is their choice and I would respect that,” he said. However, Mr. Stinchi noted that “the last time Supervisor Kabot sought to influence the outcome of the committee vote, she lost by 70 percent.”
Mr. Malone would not comment on the supervisor’s assertions and said he was focusing on the campaign. “Ronald Reagan, my political hero, had an 11th commandment, and that was ‘Thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican,’” he said.
“There are plenty areas where I agree with Linda and other areas where I disagree,” Mr. Malone said. “And that goes for Anna Throne-Holst as well.”

According to the press he had the Town Council seat locked in, with all the papers filed, sealed and delivered on Monday. Then he reneges on the deal he ... more made with Kabot. How can he be trusted by SH voters? I can’t wait to see his campaign literature. More lies and empty promises, be smart SH voters and send him packing.
Voters beware of Malone and don't let these clowns turn this election into a circus.

It’s too bad she believed all your BS. She should have ran the primary and Malone would have been out of the picture earlier. BTW who the hell is Malone anyway? I never heard of the guy before his name appeared in the paper a couple ... more months ago.
The only thing that your deal cutting accomplished was that in November Malone and now Nuzzi will loose the election. I’ve followed this soap opera in the paper since the primary in 2007. I’m now starting to think that Kabot is uncovering what Heaney and the past comptroller did with the money. It takes months for auditors to go through years of book keeping (so they must be close). Is this all being arranged so that these guy’s who are beholding to the party bosses (who arranged for them to get 3 lines in Nov) do a big cover-up, hiding what really went on. Why else would they be so desperate to see her gone?
What a disgrace you guys are. The voters of Southampton better wise up don’t let them get away with this.
I’m voting for Kabot on the Republican line screw those party guys.
Good luck to you young lady.

DJII13- Is this an argument of intelligence? Or are you going to define exactly why I am wrong. Like most poor politicians, you skirt around the issue. If I am so wrong, what are you trying to prove by telling me I am not polite? 631 politics outlines the deal very clearly, check it out..........

"Then he reneges on the deal he made with Kabot."
What direct proof do you have of a deal other than the self reported claims of the current supervisor and what was the "deal"?
That post on 631 Politics is not going dissuade anyone that the wheels are coming off that little engine that could.

DUMP LINDA TAXBOT!

G Why do you say Kabot's administrator is a betrayal. My taxes went up $100 that's not bad in this economy. If we get a democrat in town hall the laws will changes drastically building green, solar everything. If you are a pool owner check out how much those horrible looking panels cost. Not for nothing but what has ATH done in 18 months.

economic shortfall we are in. Kabot took the seat of power away from the bosses, before they could fix the books, and they continued there deals behind closed doors, but the national financial problem, showed how badly the books were cooked before they could finish the cover ups. More will come, you will see. As for the race, Kabot was blind sighted in trying to eliminate another costly primary, and was not fully aware of some of the old boys still waiting in the wings to do here in. Lets see, Malone, who is he, no one seems to know other than he works for the county and now wants to be supervisor but he will step down as told to be a council person. He was the GOP president, and has since handed it off to Charlie McArdle and Terry Flanagan, both retired town cops, and both old PBA presidents. You think they are going to be fair selecting Kabot for the party line, after this past January issue with retirements. Another set of party bosses looking for something or payback. Alex Gregor, former highway employee, now wants to run the department, he had a chance to be a life long employee, even when his sister sat as Republic GOP. Chris Nuzzi, has been in office, and I can not for the life of me think what he has done for the to make the town better? Anna and Sally have just gotten there feet wet, but they don't have any experience. Is it possible to not vote for anyone? Or is everyone we have as candidates seem they have there hand out or in someones pocket. I would like better choices.

Thanks for your comment, I don't have a pool. Clearly you will support Anna in this years election. The things that scare me for the future of my children and grandchildren are: The trillions of dollars in debt our country now has. The Health Care Plan that’s being proposed (end of live decision's is part of the bill). This is the change we now have due to the election of 2008.
BTW You never did answer my other question.

Linda is a "tough lady", and has the "crust" to give these "small fry" high school, politico's a lesson in humility. She should appeal directly to the people", be their spokesperson. Campaign on every street corner, a genuine "people's candidate, a populist. Get out the first time voter, an untapped "bundle" in this town Flanders, Riverside, Northampton, Hampton Bays, etc, are ... more begging for a "messiah". The voters she cultivates now, and her " Davida vs Goliath" persona will raise her to Albany and further. The crony system is not the way America will reinvent itself. Disassociate from the "hacks". They exist by default because no one else is interested. Show the voters what small, insignificant, inflated bores they are. Condemn these night-crawlers. They are tiresome. tedious, and minuscular in refinement.

As to your question, the record regarding town budget speaks for itself."
In other words, you haven't the faintest idea of what you've been talking about, only that it's something Republican, and therefore BAD.
Do you actually think you are bringing anything enlightening to what is supposed to a dialogue?
For those you would like to take notice, this has been a very illuminating election cycle so far -- look closely and residents may note that ... more the Democrats are sitting back and enjoying the sorry spectacle of the Republicans, Conservatives and Independences wheeling, dealing and cutting their own throats, something the Town Dems traditionally do. (Remember Jim Henry and Gary Schwartz?)
Meanwhile, although you may not agree with the person politically, there are a handful of figures on the Town political scene who just actually may have some personal integrity. There should be more of them.

The deal was never over the committee seats, the GOP committee has 75-85 seats the 5 would NOT have made the difference. In a newsday article from 7/22 it states that all parties met at the Board of Elections, Stinchi, Malone, and Kabot, Malone, an attorney, even notarized Kabot's papers. The deal was made then, that Kabot would receive the republican line and the conservative line. They would meet on Thursday to file ... more other papers. In the article in Hamptons.com you will read that Kabot made several call to meet, the calls were not returned. If no deal was made why were phone calls not returned? As a conservative party leader, Malone as what is called a Wilson Pakula that gives him the power to give the line to anyone he wants.
Were I come from a deal is a deal.
Also the Conservative party or the philosophy they believe in should play no part in decision making for the SH town board (your saying thats why Malone backed out because of the Police layoffs?). That would be out and out corruption, where is the integrity in that.
Read the law regarding police officers you will see what the 20 year rule is.

1. Received the endorsement from the Town GOP in the first place.
2. Drew a greater number of signatures on the petitions.
3. Is more of a conservative than Kabot could ever pretend to be.
Sounds to me like Malone was on a hot streak with alot of momentum behind him and everything was fine until ... more the papers were filed that monday night at the board of elections. Doesn't sound like he got a "better deal" to me just a raw one.

Malone did not broker the deal with Linda; Ed Walsh told her she could have the nod. Malone ... more had enough decency to poll his fellow committee members and take into consideration that they did not support a Conservative nomination of Linda. It was the Conservative Party committee members who decided not to give Linda the nomination not Malone or Ed Walsh. Not giving Linda the nomination was a decision made by the Party not one person.
Why shouldn’t the Conservative platform be considered when nominating a candidate? Nominating someone who is not fiscally responsible does not go in accord with the beliefs of the Conservative Party.
And the retirement law is OPTIONAL not forced retirement after 20 years of serving the community for the police department.

This whole business is starting to stink!
Total comments by Frank Wheeler: 506
All week Malone could not be reached, now he’s available to make a statement to the press.
Why would Kabot agree to this deal if it did not include the conservative line? She was lied to over the phone and at the Board of Elections.
The conservative Ex. Committee said that did not have a viable candidate for supervisor after Jim stepped aside. I ask you when did the conservative party ever have a candidate? They always ... more cross endorse, the only exception was Heaney in 2007. I checked the BOE election results from 2002-2008 they cross endorsed all the republican candidates.
They would not cross endorse Kabot because they would like to see her gone. Ask yourself why?
Quote from the SH press
Speaking to the GOP ticket, Mr. Stinchi said the Malone-Nuzzi team is a united one but added that it was up to Ms. Kabot to choose whether she wants to be part of that unified front. “She certainly seems to be going in a different direction at this point,” he said. “I would hope all Republicans will work together toward victory for the entire ticket top to bottom. I certainly will.”
end of quote
Let me say that Kabot is a team player and has always been united with her running mates.
Why would anyone say that Kabot is going in a different direction? Is it because she is speaking out about the double cross. When something stinks it stinks.
This was a double cross and they know it.
Lloyd Braun
You read the article, Malone never did say why he blew out of the supervisor race, and all he said was that Kabot had nothing do with it or any back rooms deals.
Was that an answer?
You said he drew a greater # of signatures on petitions. That’s no indication of support from voters, not when you have 75+ committee members walking for those 1400 signatures, you call that a hot streak?
Did Kabot have an army of helper’s? I don’t think so.
Oceanview
Read my reply above.
Also, first you state Kabot was not given the Cons. line because of the police issue and now it’s because she is not financial responsible.
In my opinion Kabot is a fiscal conservative;this paper had an article that she cut 1 million in the budget, with more planned in the near future.
Regarding the police issue you mentioned
This is a copy of what the police officer law/rule state: It is at the option of the Town Board:
Subdivision m of section 384-d of the retirement and social security law, as added by chapter 1117 of the laws of 1971, and amended to read as follows, "m. Notwithstanding any inconsistent provision of law, if the town board of the town of Southampton elects to make the benefits of this section available to the members of its police department, each member of such department shall be separated from service upon completion of twenty years of service, provided, however, that the town board may permit a member to continue in service on an annual basis after the completion of twenty years of service, but in no event shall such annual service be continued after a member has attained age fifty-five, except however, that members of such department who hold the rank of sergeant or higher within such department may be permitted by the town board to remain in service until the member has attained age sixty.
The voters will decide in November what the truth is.
