A New Jersey man reported on Friday that someone had stolen a black Giant 27-speed and a red/white Mongoose mountain bike, worth a total of $850, from the front porch of a hotel on South Emerson Avenue in Montauk.
Another New Jersey man reported on Saturday that someone had stolen a Schwinn beach cruiser bicycle, worth $400, and a new children’s bicycle, worth $150, also from the front porch of the room of their hotel on South Emerson Avenue in Montauk.
A Montauk man, 42, reported on Saturday that someone had stolen the book “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” from his business, Barnacle Books. The man suspects an elderly man who had bought books from the store before and was observed in the area near where the stolen book was last seen.
Police received several reports of smashed mailboxes again last week. Late Thursday night several mailboxes on Copeces Lane in Springs were damaged or destroyed. The street had already been hit badly hit by mailbox vandals on June 19, police said, and one resident requested additional police patrols for the street late in the evening. Late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, several mailboxes on Fairview Avenue in Montauk were smashed. One woman who reported the incident said that the week before, someone had broken her mailbox, but she did not report it, and her husband had just put up a new mailbox. An anonymous caller also reported damaged mailboxes on Gull Road, Soundview Drive and Duryea Avenue in Springs, but no resident wanted to file a police report.

Arrests
Joseph Chironis, 17, of Greenlawn was arrested on Friday at 4:39 a.m. at 178 Montauk Highway and charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs in the first degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Police said that they stopped Mr. Chironis after they saw him speeding. He failed all sobriety tests, police said. A search of the car revealed a plastic bag containing 56 empty glassine envelopes with a picture of a blue rabbit head on them and 19 empty glassine envelopes with the Batman logo on them, police said. They also found a bag of marijuana and a small white electronic scale, police said. Bail was set at $1,000.
Another man, 17, from Greenlawn was also arrested on Friday at 4:39 a.m. at 178 Montauk highway and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. He was released on his own recognizance.
Daniel Schlesinger, 50, of Amagansett and Steven Levin, 45, of Florida were both arrested last week for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor.
Incidents
An East Hampton woman, 41, reported on August 4 that her car, a 1980 Mercedes Benz, was on fire at 14 Main Street. The East Hampton Fire Department was called to extinguish the fire.
A village police officer reported last Wednesday that the property at 17 Fredericka Lane was in violation of village code because it was covered in junk cars, boats, and unused items, and was overgrown with grass and other refuse.
A woman, 79, reported on Friday that a deer was swimming in her pool on Toilsome Lane. When police arrived, the deer was gone.
A woman, 66, reported on Saturday that someone was having a yard sale on Accabonac Road without a permit. Police issued a summons.
