While driving to the city Saturday for my cousin Cassi’s 31st birthday bash, it really struck me how provincial my life has become since I’ve moved out here. I’m not complaining because I do live in one of the best places on Earth, but during the two-hour drive, I realized that I had not left the island since early July. How time flies.

Honestly, it gets pretty hard to leave this place since pretty much everything I want is already here. That said, every so often, it is nice to get out and experience new things, meet new people and see what the rest of the world is doing.

And even though I did manage to leave home for the overnight trip, I couldn’t resist bringing a little East End to the city with me in the form of locally grown sunflowers, fresh peaches and corn and, of course, chocolate chip cookies from Tate’s Bake Shop. The bounty was appreciated by all.

Speaking of birthday parties, next Thursday, October 1, will mark a big one for the Gruttadaurio family of Speonk. Baby AJ (Anthony Jason) will turn one that day and his Mom, Danielle, and Dad, Jason, will be commemorating not only their son’s birthday, but also the fact that everyone is healthy and well this year.

Last year, Ms. Gruttadaurio got into a serious car accident on October 1, which caused her early labor and threatened her safety and that of her unborn son. Luckily, mother and son made it through with flying colors and will be ready to celebrate the heck out of this birthday milestone. Have a great time!

Another special occasion is being planned by members of the Remsenburg Association, who will hold their annual meeting on Sunday, September 27, at 1 p.m., at the Remsenburg Academy on South Country Road. All are welcome—including prospective members. Southampton Town Councilwoman and Remsenburg resident Sally Pope will be the featured speaker.

Art lovers, don’t forget to stop by the Remsenburg Academy this weekend for the big Amy’s Ark Studio and Farm exhibit. The show will be on display from Friday, September 25, through Monday, September 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 3 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 902-3655 or 835-8024.

Students and staff hit the ground running and all went smoothly at Remsenburg/Speonk Elementary School as the new school year began earlier this month. On the first day of school, Wednesday, September 9, there were lots of smiling children getting off the school buses that morning and a welcome assembly was held afterwards. On Friday, September 11, everyone wore red, white and blue, and a brief patriotic assembly was held in the gym in honor of National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Last week was a busy one at the school and several events were thrown to get kids and parents alike into the swing of things. The Parent Teacher Association held a “Kindergarten and New Families Tea” on Wednesday, September 16, in the library. It was a chance for new students and their parents to meet in an intimate setting and discuss the programs and goals of the PTA. Attendees also received a tour of the school.

An open school night was held on Thursday, September 17, so parents could visit their children’s classrooms and meet with teachers. The annual PTA-sponsored ice cream social was then held on Friday, September 18, and fun was had by all as students enjoyed making new friends and reconnecting with old ones.

Coming up, the school librarian, Ms. Andria, will host a “Scholastic Book Fair” today, Thursday, September 24, from 6 and 8 p.m., in the library. All are welcome. Students will also get a chance to purchase books during their library time throughout the week.

Looks like we’ve got a great week of weather ahead, so I’m going to get out there and enjoy all the beauty our little slice of heaven has to offer. Hope to see you around.
