“I was relieved when I found that out,” he said.
Race organizers Amanda Moszkowski and Diane Weinberger said they couldn’t have been happier with the turnout and the overall atmosphere at the third installment of the marathon, particularly after rainy weather last year resulted in a lot of no-shows.
“It was a perfect day for a race,” Moszkowski said. “It was cool, but sunny and it was a huge mood lifter for both the runners and volunteers.”
Moszkowski said that she was pleased to see Pearlman and Allen repeat as winners and said that Allen’s presence as a standout runner is particularly special because of her local ties.
“I think it’s great that they both came back and defended their titles,” Moszkowski said . “Having Jessica repeat, and with a fabulous time to boot, is not only wonderful for her but wonderful for us and the community as she’s one of our own.”
Moszkowski said that feedback from the runners has been excellent and she said that both her and Weinberger have made a commitment to valuing the opinions of the competitors.
“We really go out of our way to communicate with our runners,” she said. “As a result, we get a lot of feedback from them and each year we’ve tried to incorporate their thoughts and ideas into the following year’s race. I think we made a lot of people very happy with the 2009 race.”
The Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon benefits Southampton Hospital and Project MOST, an after-school program that provides academic support, enrichment activities and a positive social environment. Over the past two years, the race has given $55,000 to Project MOST and $20,000 to Southampton Hospital, which was not a beneficiary until last year. The Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon also draws many runners who raise money for other charities that are associated with the race, including Team in Training, which raises money for leukemia and lymphoma research, as well as the American Cancer Society, PANCAN, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Friends of Karen, which supports families with children with serious illnesses. Last year, runners in the Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon raised more than $25,000 for those charities.
Sponsors for the Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon include JetBlue Airways, Gubbins, C. Whitmore Gardens, Mickey’s Carting, South Fork Gynecology and Emil Norsic and Sons.
