The record for the biggest pumpkin—now that it’s October, I can discuss this—was set in 2007 with the winner weighing in at 1,689 pounds. There are actually people who sell pumpkin seeds whose DNA destines them for hugeness. Someone from Howard Dill Enterprises, which sells such seeds, predicts that within the next 5 years we will see a 2,000-pound pumpkin.
To be eligible for competing for a world record, the giant gourd must not have any cracks in it! Two tips on how to supersize your next pumpkin? Give it plenty of water and lots of TLC.
The 12th annual “See You at the Pole” event was celebrated on Wednesday, September 23, across the nation and in Eastport. “See You at the Pole” is an event where students gather around their school’s flagpole to pray for their school, their community and America.
A handful of Eastport Bible Church Youth Group members arrived at ESM a little early that morning to participate. As I saw my two sons drive off in the church van that morning—they were picked up by Jeremy Herr, the youth pastor at the church—I couldn’t help but be proud of them all. I feel that every little bit helps in this world and starting out their day with their friends around the flagpole was a really good thing.
The “See You at the Pole” event began near Fort Worth, Texas, in the town of Burleson in 1990, under the precedent that there is a growing spiritual renewal occurring in America and that the country will be sustained in prayer. Hey, it can’t hurt, right? See you next year at the pole!
Eastport Bible Church will host its annual Free Carnival at the church on Sunday, October 4, beginning at 3 p.m. All are invited! There will be games, refreshments and fun! It’s all free!
Saturday, October 24, will be “Family Day” at the Selden campus of Suffolk County Community College and residents are invited to attend this event, which will showcase a wide variety of programs and services for people of all ages. Free flu shots will be given in the Brookhaven Gymnasium, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while supplies last. Low-cost mammography screenings will be offered for uninsured or underinsured women age 40 and over. (Call 696-6900 for a mammogram appointment.) A baby shower to honor Sue Clarke Sommer of Eastport was held on Saturday, September 26, at the home of Susan Hoare of Remsenburg, Sue Clarke’s sister-in-law. The beautiful shower was a luncheon attended by about a dozen family members and close friends. It was a gorgeous afternoon to enjoy lunch on the deck. Sue and Brian Sommer are expecting their first child this month and we anxiously await the news of the arrival of their son or daughter.
The “Music Idol” singing competition is returning to Eastport South Manor on Friday, October 9, at 8 p.m. Reigning champion Katie Wood of Eastport will give up her crown. There will be winner from both the junior high school and high school. This year the competition will take place in two parts, with the second date in December. Winners will be announced at the end of the December performance.
Tickets are $10 each and will be on sale at the high school during the school day the week of October 5, and at the door the evening of the event. There will be refreshments available for purchase and a boutique table of gift items on sale as well! Proceeds will benefit the music students at ESM. The event is being sponsored by the ESM Music Booster.
College Week at ESM is scheduled for October 14-21, with a College Fair slated for Wednesday, October 14. Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from more than 50 colleges and universities. College Shirt Day is Wednesday, October 21. Students and teachers are invited to wear a shirt either reflecting their alma mater or a favorite college! (No hats, please!)
Juniors will take their PSATs on Saturday, October 17, at the high school. Registrations forms and the $13 fee must be filed with the Guidance Office by Wednesday, October 7. The PSAT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton will host a carnival at Lufker’s Airport on Montauk Highway in East Moriches this weekend. There will be rides and games and refreshments and fireworks. Carnival dates and times are as follows: Thursday, October 1, 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday, October 2, 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, October 3, 2 to 11 p.m. (with fireworks at 10 p.m.); and Sunday, October 4, 2 to 8 p.m.
The third annual Pet Parade sponsored by the Moriches Community Center will be held on Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Neville Park in Center Moriches. Entry fee is $10 per pet. Proceeds from this amusing event will directly benefit the center’s “Santa’s Workshop” holiday outreach program. Call 874-3700 or 909-1455 for more information.
