For some time now, I have been wrestling with a bit of a conundrum. I’m wondering if self-awareness is enough to mitigate the plain facts, or if I am just trying to comfort myself from the inevitable.
Here it is. Can one become a crazy cat lady if one is aware and concerned of the possibility? Do crazy cat ladies know that’s what they are? And if they are aware, do they even care?
I’m an animal lover through and through. But this cat situation might just be out of control. And, of course, nothing is going to change.
Yesterday, one of my biggest fears came to light right out in the open, under the fluorescent bulbs at King Kullen. I saw a lady at the grocery store buying nothing but large quantities of canned cat food, skim milk and Lean Cuisine. Am I going to turn into that woman? Have I already?
Bless her for loving animals, but I don’t necessarily want to live the rest of my days with only furry, four-legged companions and frozen diet food.
In addition to my two girls, I’ve been taking care of this sweet feral family of four—a mama cat and her three babies. And for the past few days, I’ve been tending to my friend’s cat, Jack, while she’s away. That makes seven so far.
So, help me. I think I’m going to have to start throwing random guy things in my cart at the supermarket—like Hungry-Man dinners and Speed Stick deodorant—just so people don’t look at me and start “tsk-tsking.”
Now on to a more serious matters; enough of my folly for this week.
