Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor has embarked on a major fund-raising campaign aimed at getting back in the black after the theater’s finances were hit hard by the economic recession, and the first potential life preserver has been offered by an anonymous donor who has pledged a $250,000 challenge grant.
The grant, along with the support of artists such as Joy Behar, Alan Alda, and Lewis Black, has set the fund-raising campaign in full motion.
Mr. Alda and Ms. Behar will appear together in the first of several benefit performances that are being thrown on Bay Street’s behalf. The show, titled “Two Great Friends ... A Night of Comedy & Conversation,” will be presented on Saturday, October 10, at 8 p.m.
Ms. Behar is perhaps best known for her daily appearances on “The View,” though her work has ranged from gigs as a stand-up comedienne to her latest venture, “The Joy Behar Show” on CNN’s sister network, HLN.
Mr. Alda skyrocketed to fame playing “Hawkeye” Pierce on the television series “M*A*S*H,” going on to direct more than 30 episodes and write 19. He has been nominated for 33 Emmy Awards and taken home six, including one for his role on “The West Wing.” An accomplished author, he has appeared on Broadway and in films such as “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” “The Four Seasons,” and “Sweet Liberty.”
Both artists will take individual turns on the Bay Street stage and then come together for a casual interviewing of one another. A question-and-answer session will follow if time permits.
Tickets are $100 or, for $150, purchasers will be able to join in a reception with the stars after seeing the show. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Bay Street Box Office at 725-9500, open Wednesday through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bay Street’s fund-raising campaign will continue with a performance by Lewis Black on October 14. Donations of any size can be made by visiting www.baystreet.org. Donations may also be sent to Bay Street Theatre, P.O. Box 810, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. All donations will help Bay Street reap the full benefit of the generous challenge grant.
