I might be the worst fisherman in the world, but after a visit to the ocean beach late Sunday afternoon, I’m sure glad I took up the hobby a few years ago. No, I didn’t catch a nice keeper bass; in fact, I didn’t have a single bite. But the beauty of the waves, the dunes and the October sky were so mesmerizing that I might actually invest in a pair of waders so I can go back when the weather gets a little chillier.

Speaking of cool, here’s a cool event to put on your calendar for this week. On Saturday, the Hampton Library will present a free lecture by Dr. Alan Rice, a physics professor at Stony Brook Southampton and a member of the Montauk Observatory, who will speak on “Supernovae and the Expansion of the Universe.” The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Bridgehampton National Bank community room.

I also hear that, weather permitting, after his talk the whole party will head east to the library’s temporary building on the south side of Montauk Highway, just east of Ocean Road, for a little star-gazing through some of the observatory’s smaller telescopes.

October always brings Fire Prevention Month, and so, the Bridgehampton Fire Department will host its annual open house on Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The firehouse will be open for the kids to enjoy refreshments, demonstrations and exhibits, as well as a motor vehicle extrication demonstration using the Jaws of Life. The kids, and maybe a few adults, will also learn the potentially life-saving skill of using a fire extinguisher.

The Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons also has big doings this week. On Saturday, the group will hold its first informal study group of the “winter” season (easy, folks, let’s not rush things), when George Simonson moderates a roundtable discussion of the results of a spring 2009 grafting workshop, seasonal color in the garden and other topics of interest. The group meets in the horticultural library at the Bridgehampton Community House at 10 a.m.

On Sunday at 2 p.m., Charles Cresson will be at the Community House to present a lecture about flowering bulbs that do well despite our growing deer population. Mr. Cresson is a garden designer, consultant, photographer and writer, who has taught courses on bulbs for more than 20 years as well as being a former merchandise manager of bulbs for the W. Atlee Burpee Company. Admission is $10; members of the Alliance get in for free.

The Alliance’s Camellia Friends group, which is moderated by Jim Jeffrey, will meet on Saturday, October 31, at 10:30 a.m., in the horticultural library. The group is open, and anyone who would like to bring in blossoms from their fall-blooming camellias for display is welcome to stop on by and join the discussion group.

Next weekend, on October 24 and 25, the The Lioness Club of the Hamptons will hold its annual antiques show at the Community House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The event raises money to buy Seeing Eye dogs for the blind. Admission is $5.

The fall revival, “Tearing Down Walls of Isolation and Building Walls of Hope,” began on Wednesday and continues on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton. The Reverend Dr. Mary Jo Young, pastor of the New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, New York, is the guest revivalist, and local choirs will perform the music.

The church’s Women’s Ministry will present guest speaker Alice Agastini of the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence on Saturday, October 17, at 10 a.m. to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The ministry has asked that participants bring a donated item to support shelters.

The MAiZE at Fairview Farm at Mecox is open now through November 8. The popular outdoor adventure features the logo of the Slow Food organization, a snail, and covers an area of 8 acres. Located at 69 Horsemill Lane in Bridgehampton, it is open to the public on weekends and to groups during the week by appointment. For more information, call 631-537-1654 or visit cornfieldmaze.com.

Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman will be the guest when the Hampton Library holds its annual Pizza and Politics discussion on Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m. Mr. Schneiderman, who lives in Montauk, represents the entire South Fork and is particularly interested in the environment, health, safeguarding children, cutting taxes and relieving traffic congestion. The library has also scheduled a children’s mini-pumpkin painting activity on Saturday, October 17, at 11:30 a.m., for children 4 and older.

The Teen Read Week Fantasy Trivia Contest will be held from October 18 to 24. Participants can find the questions at the circulation desk and should answer as many as they can. The top contestant will win a prize.
