The Southampton girls tennis team improved to 10-2 in League VIII, 10-4 overall after three wins last week that solidified its standing in second place in the league behind undefeated Mercy.
The Lady Mariners swept Hampton Bays 7-0 at Red Creek Park on Monday, October 5, and defeated Riverhead 7-0 two days later at home. On Friday, Southampton beat Rocky Point 5-2.
In the win over Hampton Bays, Jordan Dubin earned an impressive win at first singles, beating Lady Bayman standout Tarrin Joslin 7-5, 6-3. Dubin was knocked out of the Division IV tournament by Joslin last year and Southampton head coach Richard “Juni” Wingfield said that her recent victory over Joslin should give Dubin confidence for the upcoming division tournament this weekend.
“Jordan played a great game,” he said. “It was a nice way for her to get that monkey off her back, so to speak.”
Brett Lieb won easily 6-2, 6-1 at second singles, Alisha Steindecker won 6-4, 6-0 at third singles and seventh-grader Noa Dubin won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.
Rebecca Katz and Linda Zambrano won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, Dakota Kalbacher and Allison Noonan won 6-2, 6-0 at second doubles and Charlotte LaGuardia and Jen Gardner won 6-1, 7-5 at third doubles.
Southampton won all its singles matches in straight sets against Riverhead, with Jordan Dubin winning 6-1, 6-0 at first, Lieb prevailing 6-2, 7-6 at second, Noa Dubin earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at third and Zambrano winning 6-3, 6-3 at fourth.
Katz and Amanda Acquino won in three sets at first doubles against Mia McCombe and Bri Ristau, who normally play at second and third singles for Riverhead. The Lady Mariners won the first set 6-1, lost the second set 6-4 and won the decisive set 6-4.
Paulina Kepczynska and Elizabeth Grun won 6-3, 6-1 at second doubles and LaGuardia and Katie Laffey won 6-2, 6-3 at third doubles.
Southampton wrapped up its 5-2 win over Rocky Point quickly by dominating the singles lineup. Jordan Dubin won 6-0, 6-1, Lieb won 6-0, 6-0, Steindecker won 6-1, 6-0 and Noa Dubin won 6-0, 6-0, keeping her undefeated record alive.
Katz and Acquino lost 6-4, 6-2 at first doubles to Katie Dallon and Ana Choung, who usually play at first and second singles. The good news for the Lady Mariners doubles team is that Dallon and Choung will not be competing as a doubles team in the division tournament.
Kepczynska and Grun won in a three-set grinder at second doubles, winning the first set 7-6, losing the second set 6-4 and winning the third set 7-6 (7-4). Zambrano and Laura Nickolich lost in three sets at third doubles, losing the first set 7-6, winning the second set 6-3 and losing the third set 7-6 (7-5).
Southampton was scheduled to visit Center Moriches on Tuesday, October 13, and will close the regular season at home against Southold/Greenport on Thursday, October 15. The Division IV tournament will begin on Saturday, October 17, with the first two rounds at William Floyd High School starting at noon. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Monday, October 19, at Shoreham/Wading River High School and the finals will take place the following day at Shoreham.
Lieb and Dubin as well as Katz and Acquino and Kpeczynska and Grun will compete in the tournament, because each school automatically sends its top two singles players and top two doubles teams. Wingfield said he’s hoping that Steindecker and Noa Dubin will earn bids as unseeded players. The seeding meeting will take place on Thursday, October 15, to determine the seedings and which additional players will earn spots in the tournament.
