The Springs Presbyterian Church has resumed Bible study on Tuesday afternoons at 3 p.m. The group is currently studying the Book of Job. Yoga classes are also being offered at the church for kids age 3 to 5 on Friday mornings from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Call Kristen at 725-8042 for more information.

The Reverend Tony Larson e-mailed me that the food pantry supplied 91 bags of food to people in need and that is way above normal for this time of year. I have mentioned before that the church needs donations of both the financial and nonperishable food varieties. Times are tough, give what you can.

There is another way to help feed the hungry. Springs resident Kevin Kennedy is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization that delivers hot meals to people who for whatever reason can’t cook for themselves. Five days a week 50 volunteers pack the meals and then deliver them. Each meal consists of a hot dish, a roll, a fresh sandwich, milk, juice and a piece of fruit. On Fridays they deliver an extra two frozen dinners for the weekend.

In addition to the food, they also bring a copy of The East Hampton Press and the Independent to about 70 homebound people. Clients are charged based on their ability to pay. Many pay nothing. The meals are prepared by Dreesen’s Catering and cost about $8 each. As Kevin told me, “You’re not just delivering meals. You get to chat with people, perhaps learn a thing or two from the 94-year-old man who was born and raised in Wainscott.” According to Kevin, the work is embarrassingly easy. Only a couple hours a week. He drives one of seven routes one day a week. If you are interested in helping, call Gretchen at 329-1669.

The Town of East Hampton is offering a program to mothers and their preschool children called Mommy and Me. It is about mothers getting together to talk about the raising of children, networking and socialization. There will be speakers on relevant issues and a lending library of books and videos. The group meets in Springs on Friday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Springs Youth Center on Ed Hults Lane next to the school. For more information, call 324-4947.

Don’t forget this Sunday, October 25, at 1:30 p.m., the Springs Historical Society is hosting a walking tour with Hugh King starting at the Springs Library. The tour includes Ashawagh Hall, the church, the cemetery, Parsons Blacksmith Shop, the Julius Parsons House, the David Talmage House and other attractions. Tickets are $10 per person and refreshments will be served after the walk. There is no rain date.

The Springs Writers Group is meeting again on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at Ashawagh Hall. As I have said before, it is open to anyone with a pen and a pulse. Contact me if you are interested.

I am always looking for Springs news, so if you want me to mention a birth, marriage, deployment, a return home, an anniversary, a bad break up or anything else feel free to call or e-mail at my above numbers and addresses.
