A Southampton man was arrested over the weekend when police said he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Hampton Bays home, attacked her and then later attempted to hide from police in a closet.

Southampton Town Police said Miguel Lopez, 24, attacked the woman, who lives on Fanning Avenue, at about 12:12 a.m. on Saturday and then fled the house before police arrived. Officers attempted to search the property with the New York State Police Department K-9 unit but were unable to find him.

Mr. Lopez then entered the house again at around 2:30 a.m., but that time the woman was able to escape. She then called police, who surrounded Mr. Lopez in the house. Police then entered the home and found Mr. Lopez hiding in a bedroom closet. After a brief struggle, Mr. Lopez was arrested and transported to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing.

Mr. Lopez was charged with second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal contempt, both felonies, plus second-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal contempt and second-degree menacing, all misdemeanors. His arraignment information was not immediately available.

Man Leads Police on Car Chase

A Riverhead man was arrested last week after he led Quogue Village Police on a chase through Quogue and Westhampton Beach villages, which ended in a wooded area in Speonk.

Dallas Johnson, 34, refused to stop for Quogue Village Police officers after they attempted to pull him over for speeding at around 9:45 p.m. on Friday. The five-minute chase ended near the intersection of Dock Road and South Country Road in Speonk, after Mr. Johnson stopped in a wooded area.

Police could not say exactly how fast Mr. Johnson was traveling but noted that he was traveling above the posted limit in some areas. The Quogue Village Police Department was assisted by the Westhampton Beach, Southampton Town and New York State Police departments.

Police said Mr. Johnson committed about 19 traffic infractions during the chase. It is not clear why he did not originally stop for police officers.

Mr. Johnson was charged with reckless driving and unlawful fleeing, both misdemeanors. No injuries were reported.

Sexual Abuse Arrest at Center

A man was arrested at a substance abuse treatment center in Hampton Bays this week after a woman said he molested her in a laundry room at the facility.

Southampton Town Police arrested Ralph P. Delacore, 34, of East Northport at 11:56 p.m. on Sunday after he was accused of forcing himself on the woman and fondling her against her will. Police said both Mr. Delacore and the woman he fondled were patients at the center.

Mr. Delacore was charged with third-degree aggravated sexual abuse, a felony, and sexual misconduct, a misdemeanor. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing. His arraignment information was not immediately available.

Police Discover Lottery Scam

An East Quogue senior citizen was targeted in a lottery scam earlier this month, after receiving a fake letter claiming that she had won $3,500 in a drawing at a local retail chain. The letter did not specify which store.

The woman reported to Southampton Town Police on October 5 that she had received a suspicious looking letter asking for money. Upon further investigation, police determined that the letter was indeed fake.

Enclosed with the letter was a check from Penn Mutual for $3,500 with a request that the woman first send $2,800 via Western Union or MoneyGram International for taxes owed on the winnings. The woman reported that she also received several phone calls from people attempting to verify that she had received the winning check.

“It’s a fake company,” Southampton Town Police Sergeant Todd Bennett said.

Sgt. Bennett requested that anyone who receives a letter from Penn Mutual contact Southampton Town Police at 728-5000.
