Eastport South Manor
In recognition of National Fire Safety and Prevention month, Eastport Elementary School students received a visit from the Eastport Fire Department earlier this month. Firefighters arrived on a fire truck and met with first, second and third grade students.
The firefighters discussed several fire safety and prevention issues with the children, including the importance of smoke alarms, assigning and practicing escape routes from a house, and the correct way to “stop, drop and roll” in the event that their clothes catch fire. After the assembly, students received a tour of the fire truck.
Students at South Street Elementary School were part of an attempt to set a new record for the largest simultaneous reading of a book with a reading of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” on October 8. The event was sponsored by the not-for-profit early literacy advocacy group Jumpstart. The book was read aloud in classrooms around the world. After the reading, students created several caterpillar- and butterfly-theme crafts that are now on display in the school’s kindergarten hallway.
The Science Department at the Eastport South Manor Junior-Senior High School celebrated Earth Science Week from October 11-17. Students participated in a variety of activities and a plethora of posters were on display in the school. Students also attended assemblies that featured Jack Monti of the U.S. Geological Survey and Melissa Griffiths of the Central Pine Barrens Commission as guest speakers.
