A minivan crashed into a utility pole, nearly snapping it in half, early Saturday morning on Montauk Highway in Eastport, according to the Eastport Fire Department.

The sole passenger of the eastbound Ford Minivan, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue by East Moriches Community Ambulance. The accident occurred near Seatuck Creek.

Suffolk County Police and ambulance personnel were already attending to the male driver of the minivan, who was not identified, when the Eastport Fire Department arrived just before 5 a.m. on Saturday, October 17. About 20 firefighters responded and disconnected the car’s battery, cleaned off the roadway and rerouted traffic around the scene for about 30 minutes. There was no fire and no extrication necessary, said Eastport Fire Chief Tom Jacobsen.

The utility pole was damaged at its base. There were no power outages reported, Mr. Jacobsen said.

The utility pole, which is owned by Verizon, was replaced Saturday afternoon with the help of Long Island Power Authority, according to LIPA spokesman Mark Gross.

Firefighters did not know the cause of the accident. The road conditions were dry and clear, but it was still dark at the time of the accident, said Bud Mazura, the fire department spokesman.

Suffolk County Police are investigating the accident.
