The New York State Board of Regents on Monday approved Peconic Public Broadcasting’s charter application for incorporation, moving it one step closer to purchasing the station license for WLIU 88.3FM, the public radio station based at Stony Brook Southampton.

Peconic Public Broadcasting, a new nonprofit educational corporation formed by WLIU supporters who wanted to ensure the station license would stay in local hands, won its bid to buy the station for about $2.4 million in cash and services earlier this month. Long Island University, which owns the station based at the former Southampton College campus in Shinnecock Hills, announced in August that it would sell the license, for purely financial reasons, and many feared that an out-ot-town or out-of-state interest would purchase it.

Because the corporation will fall under the “educational” category of nonprofits, its incorporation needed the Regents’ stamp of approval.

WLIU is currently located in Chancellors Hall on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. Peconic Public Broadcasting plans to move it to Wainscott Studios in Wainscott.

In the coming weeks, Peconic’s founders and “placeholders,” Porter Bibb, Michael Rosenberg and WLIU station manager Wally Smith, will either be joined or replaced by a new, formal board of directors.

“I applaud and am much appreciative of the efforts of the Board of Regents in realizing the time sensitive nature of this matter and expediting this charter application,” State Assemblyman and WLIU supporter Fred W. Thiele Jr. said in a press release issued Tuesday.
