It has been a very long week for all of the kids around town with Halloween waiting in the wings. But it is finally here! The day and night for ghosts and ghouls, princesses and superheroes, tricks and treats.
This year I will be the proud parent of a ladybug, a nurse and a hot dog ... who could be prouder than me?
Please remember that with All Hallows Eve comes some unusual threats to our children, so make sure you educate them before they head out collecting goodies. Tell them not to eat any treats until they get home. Tell them not to walk up to any strangers in cars who are offering candy. And tell them to carry a flashlight if they are going trick-or-treating at night. Most importantly, tell them to have fun and be respectful of other people’s property.
We are looking forward to the trick-or-treaters this year. But all those older children, who plan on showing up with a pillowcase in hand and no costume, should be prepared to sing The National Anthem if they expect any goodies from me. No costume? Then you owe me a song!
After the Halloween festivities, there is a great day planned at the Big Duck Ranch on Flanders Road on Sunday, November 1. The inaugural Autumn Antique Auto Show will be ready to roll starting at 9 a.m. and will continue until 4 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, November 8.
Built in 1931, The Big Duck is the perfect spot for a classic car show. In fact, one of the cars that will be displayed is the same kind of car that appears in a photo with the original farmer, Martin Maurer. That photo is now on display inside The Big Duck. The owner of that classic car is Charles Cali, president of the Long Island Moose Classic Car Club and he is running Sunday’s show for The Friends of The Big Duck.
The day will include raffles with many prizes and live rock-and-roll music by The Notations. Each attendee will get to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award, which will be awarded to the most popular entry toward the end of the day.
If you are thinking of entering your classic car or truck, you are urged to pre-register for $15. On the day of the show, the entry fee will increase to $20. All entries must be registered and insured and must have a fire extinguisher. To enter you vehicle, visit southamptonwest.com.
The fee for attendees is $5 per person and there is no charge for children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult. For more details, please call Charlie at 831-3547.
If you want to show off your Halloween costume and enjoy some great blues music at the same time, then head on down to the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall on Saturday, October 31. Frank Latorre and the Kingbees, winners of the 2009 LIBS Blues Challenge, and Ken “The Rocket” Korb and special guest Dorian will all be performing.
The party gets started at 8 p.m. and finishes up with an after party at Tweeds where costume prizes will be awarded. Admission to the concert is $25 per person and the theater is located on Peconic Avenue in Riverhead.
Congratulations to Raymond Wolter and Elizabeth Hanlon from the Riverhead Allstate office who were recently designated as a Premier Service Agency for 2009. This prestigious honor is bestowed upon less than one-third of the Allstate agents in New York State. Keep up the good work.
The Peconic Community Council, a not-for-profit organization, will be hosting a benefit called “Opening Doors for the Homeless” at Martha Clara Vineyards on Friday, November 6. Proceeds from this event will benefit Maureen’s Haven and its many programs that offer vital services to the homeless on the East End. The group will also honor State Assemblyman Marc Alessi for his continued support of the agency.
The festivities will run from 7 to 11 p.m., and the first two hours will include passed hors d’oeuvres, a salad bar and a free glass of wine. The final two hours will feature passed desserts, coffee and tea service. There will also be a free door prize raffle, drawings for gift baskets and a 50/50 raffle.
Tickets are $55 per person and are limited. Please call 727-6831 to get your ticket and buy your raffle tickets. Martha Clara Vineyards is located at 6025 Sound Avenue in Riverhead.
That’s it for this week. Have a great one and I will see you around the neighborhood.
