Sitting Democratic Town Justice Catherine Cahill, 55, has been on the bench in East Hampton for 16 years.

Ms. Cahill, who was raised in the Bronx, is a former East End prosecutor in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, who had studied anthropology and worked as a social worker in New York City before getting her law degree from Pace University.

Ms. Cahill prides herself on the cordial service that people who use the court receive from her staff. She has taken it upon herself to get a grant for a metal detector at the entrance to the new courtroom, but says she has been stymied by the town, which can’t afford the personnel to staff the metal detector.

“I love my job. I feel that I am very productive in my job. I have a good grip on the criminal justice system,” she said in a recent interview.

Andy Hammer

Republican Town Justice candidate Andy Hammer, 40, is an attorney in private practice with George Biondo in Montauk.

Mr. Hammer received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Cornell University and his law degree in environmental law from Vermont Law School.

He has worked with the Peconic Land Trust and several conservation groups in California, and served as an assistant East Hampton town attorney from 2000 to 2003, where he primarily prosecuted zoning cases.

Mr. Hammer said that, if elected, he hopes he would bring a balanced perspective based on his work both as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney.

Mr. Hammer said that he would like to ensure the safety of the courtroom by installing a metal detector and that he would like to streamline the court’s zoning calendar on Mondays. He also pledged during the campaign to learn to speak Spanish and to reach out to the Spanish-speaking community, which uses the courtroom a great deal.

“The job needs to be done by someone who wants to do it and who cares about doing it,” he said, urging voters to learn about more about the candidates before voting.

Cathy has been a great part of the legal system in East Hampton. She is a fair judge, very forthright and honest. I hope the court is lucky enough to have her continue in her role.

Mr. Hammer wants to make the courts like a New York City system with metal detectors - not necessary right now in the East End - there is a police officer on duty already. Also, there are budget constraints right now and the cost would be a lot. Love the fact that he wants to reach out to the Spanish speaking ... more

I don't believe your characterization is accurate. I have never been to a court in New York City, but our courts in Southampton, Riverhead and other east end (and state wide) courts utilize metal detector technology to insure the safety of the public. This issue is being addressed by the Town and was supported by Judge Cahill in our Star interview. The cost is unfortunately irrelevant- the need is acute and it will be implemented. As to "an obvious ploy to get voters", some of my dearest friends ... more

Cathy? Clearly you're biased if you're close enough to her to call her Cathy.

Judge Cahill is a disgrace to the bench. She's prejudicial and biased, and bases her rulings on her personal feelings, not the law, especially when it comes to her friends. She's the perfect judge for East Hampton, where incompetence and corruption have been shown to rule the township.

And don't forget that "Cathy" is currently under investigation for a fraudulent land deal she did with her husband in which she pocketed 1.895 million dollars of taxpayer money.
