The East Hampton girls swim team defended the top spot in League III last week with wins over Hauppauge and West Babylon.
This week the girls were scheduled to host two home meets against the other top teams in the league, West Islip and Harborfields. The League III championships will follow next Thursday.
The Lady Bonackers competed in their last road meet at Hauppauge last Monday and beat the Lady Eagles 103-79.
Freshman Lydia Florio won the 200-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 2:13.97. Eighth-grader Marina Preiss won the 50-yard freestyle event in 25.96 seconds, which head coach John McGeehan said is an excellent time, and freshman Skye Marigold won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.51 seconds.
“It felt good,” McGeehan said, explaining that the girls had a very satisfying performance in their final away meet, though the team will return to Hauppauge for the league championships at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5.
East Hampton dominated all 11 events and beat West Babylon 99-73 at home on Wednesday.
Eighth-grader Morgan German placed first in the butterfly with a time of 1:12.31. Her time wasn’t a personal best, but McGeehan said she had an excellent performance and a very good race. Laura Gunderson, a freshman, achieved her personal-best time and first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:17.20.
Because the Lady Bonackers are a stronger team than West Babylon, McGeehan said he gave his swimmers the opportunity to compete in different events. He noted that the team wouldn’t be able to take those risks against the stronger teams this week.
East Hampton is now in first place with a 3-0 record in League III and 5-2 overall. The team was scheduled to host second-place West Islip (3-0 and 4-3 overall) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday and third-place Harborfields (1-1 and 5-1 overall) at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“It’s perfect, right at the end of the season,” McGeehan said, pleased that his girls are facing their toughest League III opposition after gaining weeks of experience and practice. He was equally happy that the meets are both at home.
Monday’s meet against the Lady Lions is basically a battle for first place in the league, McGeehan said. He noted that East Hampton’s chances to win the league championship will become much clearer after facing their top competitor.
