A Water Mill man was charged with DWI on Halloween night after Southampton Town Police said he lost control of his car and hit a tree in Southampton.

Town Police said 58-year-old Patrick H. Merceron was traveling on Majors Path at 8:37 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, when his 2006 Cadillac left the road and hit a tree. No other cars were involved in the accident, authorities said.

Mr. Merceron was charged with DWI, a felony, and transported to Southampton Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Police said he refused to submit to a chemical test at the hospital and was later taken to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing.
