Ross Upper School

Last week, the girls varsity tennis team beat Mercy 5-2, finishing in third place behind Westhampton and East Hampton, the two top teams in Suffolk County. The team’s final record for the season is 6-7, and Ross earned the right to play in the team conference tournament on October 30, featuring the 16 best teams in the county. Also, freshman Nadia Smergut is in the semifinals of the sectional individual tournament.

Meanwhile, the girls varsity volleyball team continued their winning streak, defeating Greenport/Southold in another close game 3-2 last week.

The soccer teams at Ross dished up a strong offense and defense with great moves by several players including Charles McIntosh, Liam Chaskey, Henry Lee and Nikki Betuel. In boys varsity soccer, Ross played Pierson last week and lost 3-0. Charles played well defensively, while forward Liam had a great shot on the goal. Midfielder Henry also played a good game. In middle school girls soccer, Ross played Hampton Bays in a closely matched game last week. Nikki Betuel scored in the first quarter. Hampton Bays tied the game in the second quarter, and then snuck a controversial second goal late in the fourth. Ross was defeated 2-1.

East Hampton Middle School

East Hampton Middle School took part in Red Ribbon Week. Led by health teacher Ginny Reale and school nurse Barbara Tracey, students were engaged in various activities to show their personal commitment to live drug-free lives. They “put a cap on drugs” by wearing hats on Monday, “fought the battle against drugs” in camouflage on Tuesday, “followed their dreams” on Wednesday, pajama day, and almost the entire school was in red on Thursday. The week ended with “costumes for a cause” on Friday, where students dressed up in creative costumes.

All classes were invited to take part in “Scared Straight,” a haunted journey through the effects of drug and alcohol abuse held in Mrs. Reale’s room.

It is National Novel Writing Month and all eighth grade students will be taking part in the Young Writers Program: the novel writing challenge. All classes have been preparing by studying characterization, elements of fiction and setting up author profiles on the Young Writers Program website.

Students will be writing furiously for the entire month in order to reach their various word count goals ranging from 10,000 to 50,000.

Stella Maris Regional School

The third-graders had a visit from members of the Kiwanis Club to kick off the school’s “Reading Challenge.” Everyone in the class received dictionaries to help complete their “curiosity craving” for words. The Reading Challenge at Stella Maris began last Thursday. Each class has a goal for the number of books to read. The library’s mission to collect 101 dalmatian Beanie Babies to enjoy with the book is off to an admirable start with five collected so far. The goal is also to use the dalmatians to count to 100 in Spanish. All donations are welcome.
