A Water Mill man was charged with DWI on Halloween night after Southampton Town Police said he lost control of his car and hit a tree in Southampton.
Town Police said 58-year-old Patrick H. Merceron was traveling on Majors Path at 8:37 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, when his 2006 Cadillac left the road and hit a tree. No other cars were involved in the accident. Police would not say which direction Mr. Merceron was traveling at the time of the accident.
Mr. Merceron was charged with DWI, a felony, and transported by Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. He received an elevated DWI charge because he has a prior alcohol-related conviction, according to police.
Police added that Mr. Merceron refused to submit to a chemical test at the hospital and was later taken to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing.
He was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court on Sunday and released after posting $2,500 bail.
Man Assaulted in Flanders
A Flanders man was hospitalized after being punched in the head by a stranger while walking down Flanders Road on Halloween night.
The 43-year-old victim told Southampton Town Police that he was walking along the shoulder of Flanders Road when an unknown man approached him at around 11:30 p.m. The man attacked the victim, knocked him to the ground and then fled on foot.
The victim was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where he received four stitches near an eye and seven stitches on his elbow. The victim was unable to give any description of his attacker to police.
No arrests have been made and the incident is still under investigation, police said.
