Not only is today Veterans Day, but it would also be Dick Kane’s birthday. Take this day to honor not only our veterans past and present but family members as well.

This Saturday, November 14, is the Weekend Warrior’s 11th annual Tour of the Shore Beach Triathlon. The race takes place at Lazy Point at 9:30 a.m. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. The course is a 2.5-mile kayak, 11.5-mile mountain bike and a 4.5-mile run. The Amagansett satellite of the East Hampton Food Pantry is now officially open every Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. in Scoville Hall. For more information or if you would like to volunteer, please call Kathy Burns at 324-3025.

“Who’s going to pay for this?” will be the sermon given by Steven E. Howarth of the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett on Sunday, November 15, at 11 a.m.

On Sunday, November 29, Reverend Howarth will conduct a Taize Prayer Service at 7 p.m. This contemplative service will be held on the fourth Sunday of every month.

Sunday school pins and bars were recently distributed as follows. First year pins were given to Madison Bistrian, Kayla Lester and Mark Daniels Jr. A second year bar was given to Olivia Davis and third year bars were awarded to my daughter, Lucy Emptage, Tiana and Thomas Treadwell and Jerry and Ashley Simons. Congratulations to the recipients.

The Women’s Guild Christmas Craft Sale and Deacons’ Silver Tea will take place on Saturday, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Scoville Hall. Handmade items, Christmas decorations, and the famous church cookbook will all be sold. This year there will be a jewelry table as well. All proceeds from the cookbook and jewelry will go to the church. The deacons will serve tea sandwiches and dessert throughout the day. Rada stainless steel items can also be purchased. This is a great way to start your Christmas shopping.

The Session and the Congregation are proud to announce that Reverend Steven E. Howarth was awarded this year’s “Chief’s Award” by the Amagansett Fire Department on October 3 at the annual inspection dinner. This award is given each year to one member of the department for outstanding service, a truly honorable award to receive.

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church holds its worship service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and all are welcome to attend.

In school news; there is no school today to honor our veterans. Friday is the end of the first marking period followed by parent-teacher conferences next week.

Monday, November 16, there will be a PTA meeting from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the school library. Please try to attend. Remember prekindergarten parents, if you would like to attend the meeting, check with Mrs. Bianchi. She may be on hand so you could drop your kids earlier. Tuesday, November 24, is the annual Thanksgiving feast. This event is hosted by the school and the PTA. Each grade works together to make a portion of the meal. It is a true feast. There will also be a box top drawing, so make sure to get your box tops to your grade. Who knows? Someone besides Lucy or Declan may win this year’s prize. The highlight if this event is always Mrs. Bianchi’s pre-K “turkey wobble.” I can’t wait to see the little ones wobble.

In music, Cindy Galvin has announced that fifth-graders Zack Meyer, Arleigh Rodgers, Katie McGovern, AbbyQuinn Nanci-Ross, and Camille Barrett were all nominated to participate in this year’s SCMEA All-County Chorus. Good luck to them all!

The free chess program has begun at the Youth Park Clubhouse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for kids in grades one through five. All skill levels are welcome. Check it out.

The library is also closed today, but come by on Saturday, November 14, at 2 p.m., for a Family Story Time of intrigue. Then on Saturday, November 21, at 10 a.m., is the turkey-themed story extravaganza. Come and join them to listen to stories and make a crazy turkey craft to take home.

Thursday, November 26, Thanksgiving Day, is the 33rd annual “Run for Fun” 3- and 6-mile run/walk at 10 a.m. at the Montauk Circle. Racers must check in and register between 8 and 9:30 a.m. You can also register at the Department of Parks and Recreation at 159 Pantigo Road in East Hampton or at the Montauk Playhouse at 240 Edgemere Street in Montauk. The fee is $8 and $10 on the day of the race. Come on down before your feast and bring your family and friends to cheer you on!

A loyal reader has asked if anyone has any ideas on how to discourage the deer that are now even destroying the beautiful foliage on Main Street. A deer fence has now become a prerequisite when looking for a home. Gone are the days of simply wanting a pool. I know it is a problem for all, including the deer that just don’t have enough to eat and are forced to join the traffic on Main Street for a meal. Any humane suggestions should be shared with your neighbors.
