Quogue Volunteer Fire Department First Assistant Chief Christopher Osborne, who is also the village’s ordinance inspector and 350th anniversary planner par excellence, wanted to express his gratitude—and the gratitude of the entire fire department—to some of the many people who helped out with services honoring and bidding farewell to former Chief Robert Jeffries.

First and foremost, Mr. Osborne offered a tip of the volunteer’s helmet and a thank-you to “all of our neighboring fire departments, with special thanks to Hampton Bays, East Quogue and Westhampton Beach.” He pointed out that the new owners of the Quogue Country Market, Fred and Amy Schoenfeld, “took care of all the family’s needs and did all the little things to make this entire weekend a little easier.”

“Lisa and Leanna DiMiceli kept the troops fed,” Mr. Osborne added, “while logging countless miles walking back and forth between the market and the QFD. Thank you all for a fitting tribute to our former Chief.”

Mr. Osborne also reported that Preston Jankowski received a lovely 55th birthday present courtesy of the Quogue Fire Department volunteers: a brand new bike that is as fully equipped as the elite New York City delivery bikes and built to last. The 1st Assistant Chief offered thanks to Liz at Homespun for her guidance with this special delivery, along with Bruce and Grace Davidson of Double Rainbow on Jessup Avenue and Walter Stockton.

Mr. Osborne also wanted to make sure that everyone circles November 29 on their calendars: That’s the date of the Quogue Volunteer Fire Department Benevolent Pancake Breakfast, served up most deliciously from 8 a.m. to noon.

The artists’ reception for the November “Art of Aerial Photography” show at the Quogue Library Art Gallery is slated for this Saturday, November 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. This is a great show, from every perspective: it has color, composition, mystery and history, a tasty and satisfying visual feast that should be seen by all.

And there’s a lot more going on over at the library, with a holiday theme tying together a number of programs and activities. Donations to the annual Coat Drive this year will be passed along to the good folks at Human Resources of the Hamptons, who will make sure the coats get to those who need them the most. The Food for Fines program allows those facing overdue charges to bring in one non-perishable food item in payment for each overdue item from now through December 31, with all the food going to local food banks to help out our less fortunate neighbors.

The seventh annual Holiday Children’s Book Drive is also already underway, so At Quaquanantuck reminds one and all to check around the shelves—and under the beds—for those kids’ books no longer needed in your home that might bring some smiles during this season of giving and celebration.

For those who like to add seasonal decor to their nests, there will be a two-part Floral Arrangement Workshop offered at the library, with the first installment scheduled this Sunday, November 15, at 2 p.m., and the second session planned for December 13 at the same time.

Participants will have an opportunity to enjoy the festive scents and sounds of the season as they create a delightful evergreen centerpiece for the holiday table. In the two-part workshop, students will first design a centerpiece for Thanksgiving and then a second for the December holidays. Space is limited, so aspiring arrangers are encouraged to sign up early by calling 653-4224, ext. 4. Materials fee is $15 per class.

Bruce and Grace Davidson have passed along an update on what Double Rainbow carries for the holidays. Among much, there is a complete selection of Godiva chocolates, with discounts offered on purchases of $100 or more (http://hamptonchocolates.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page32.html).

The toy selection includes Playmobil, Hello Kitty, Chococat, Lego, jigsaw puzzles, Gund Plush, and many others (http://hamptontoys.com). Definitely worth checking out.

Have Your Cake Ltd. will open its Jessup Avenue retail shop during Thanksgiving week: stay tuned for details.
