The fifth-seeded East Hampton field hockey team visited top-ranked Shoreham/Wading River for the Class B semifinals ready to defend, but its offense was nonexistent in a 3-0 loss to the Lady Wildcats on Wednesday, November 4.
The loss effectively ended the Lady Bonackers season after they had defeated fourth-seeded Bayport/Blue Point 1-0 on Monday afternoon to advance to the semifinals against Shoreham/Wading River. The girls were 7-7 during the regular season with 119.30 power points, which placed them fifth in Division III. Shoreham/Wading River remains undefeated in 17 games this season.
East Hampton head coach Becky Schwartz was proud of her team’s accomplishments this season.
“We had our ups and downs,” she said. “We went into a couple of intense overtimes. They actually thrive on some of the thrills of being that intense, they do very well, they’re a good pressure team. In general, they got really far. This was great for them. I think they didn’t think that this could happen this year, but they did very well. I’m happy.”
The Lady Bonackers could only muster two shots the entire game with both shots coming in the first half. Shoreham/Wading River had 25 shots throughout the game and also had 20 corners as the Lady Bonackers failed to earn a corner for themselves.
Shoreham/Wading River senior captain Chelsea Creta put her team on top with 4:40 remaining in the first half as the Lady Wildcats were pressuring the East Hampton defense all day, but couldn’t get one past East Hampton junior goalie Curran Brierley, who made 16 saves in the first half alone.
Sophomore Lady Wildcat Debi-Michelle Jantzen scored her team’s second goal at 13:14 in the second half and just about five minutes later senior captain Kaitlyn Brosco added the third and final goal of the game.
Schwartz thought her team played well especially in the first half.
“We really made them work for everything they got,” she said. “My defense and my goalie [were] especially phenomenal. [Brierley] really didn’t let a thing through that was possible. I was proud of them. That first half was awesome.”
Schwartz knew coming in that it was going to be a defensive contest, having lost at Shoreham/Wading River 3-0 on September 30 and 4-0 at home on October 19.
“I thought we would have had more opportunities,” she said. “I thought we’d at least get a couple of corners on them, but they’re a really good, very strong offensive team.”
Danielle Waleko, Shannon Anderson, Lauren Fitzgerald, Alyssa Eurell, Emily Kronuch and Devon McGorisk will all be graduating in 2010. If all goes according to plan, there will be 11 girls returning to the team next season and Brierley should be one of the focal points.
“She’s my junior, thank goodness,” Schwartz said. “She’s a very intense goalie, she’s just phenomenal. She deserves the best of the best team behind her and she does, she has a great team behind her, so she’s excited about next year.”
