The Eastport South Manor girls volleyball team made fairly quick work of Sayville in the Class A quarterfinals at home Friday, November 6, defeating the Lady Golden Flashes, 3-0.
The Lady Sharks hosted third-seeded Islip on Tuesday in a semifinal match. The winner of that match will face the winner of the East Hampton/Westhampton Beach semifinal on Thursday at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue for the Suffolk County Class A championship.
ESM had some early trouble in the first game against Sayville. At one point, the Lady Sharks were down, 17-13, but they went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-17 lead. They then went on a 6-0 run, capped by a service ace by senior Melissa Pennica, to close out the first game win at 25-19. While the second set might have been close in points, ESM never lost its lead after starting on a 5-0 run and wound up winning, 25-20. ESM was down, 5-2, in the third set before they were able to make their first serve, but they finally tied the game at 8-8 before going on a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Sayville came back and tied the game at 15-15 and then again at 19-19, but the Lady Sharks went on another 5-0 run and wound up winning, 25-19.
ESM junior Cassidie Watson had 30 digs, while senior Colleen Bechhoff had 25 assists. Seniors Jackie Moeller and Alex Marshall and sophomore Laura Diehl all had five kills each.
ESM head coach Don Consorte said the girls were slowed somewhat after several team members came down with the flu this past week, but they were able to overcome all obstacles to get the win.
“I think at times when we needed to step it up, we did,” he said. “I think one of the things that [the team] has is good character. We’ll make some errors. We’ll do some stuff sometimes to allow teams to kind of hang in there a little bit. But we do eventually pull away, and that’s what we needed to do today and that’s what we did.”
After a slow start to the season, Bechhoff said the girls just got back “to playing volleyball the way we should,” which has led to the Lady Sharks winning eight matches in a row since October 5 and a share of the League V title with Islip.
