An 81-year-old East Moriches man was seriously injured after he lost control of his car and crashed into an overpass on County Road 51 in Manorville on Friday afternoon, November 6.
Suffolk County Police Detective Sergeant Mike Darulli of the 7th Squad said the cause of the crash was still unknown and is under investigation.
The driver of the car, Martin Fay of East Moriches, was airlifted via Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center following the accident. He was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday, police said.
“The only witness there states that she saw him northeast bound on County Road 51, and then she heard a crash,” Det. Sgt. Darulli said. There was “no indication of speed being a factor, or any other reason. It’s unknown. He was 81 years old.”
Mr. Fay was driving a 2002 Pontiac when police said he lost control of the car at about 4 p.m. and hit the concrete posts supporting the County Road 111 overpass.
Firefighters from the Eastport Fire Department, who responded to the scene at about 4:10 p.m., said they found Mr. Fay in his car, which was lodged between the support columns and the embankment on the south side of the overpass. Traffic was halted on County Road 51 for about an hour to make way for the helicopter landing, according to a statement issued by the fire department.
According to the release, 25 firefighters responded to the accident with two pumper trucks, one heavy rescue unit and two traffic control vehicles. East Moriches Community Ambulance members provided EMS support.
The damage to the car was “extensive,” Det. Sgt. Darulli said.
“He was on County Road 51 and he hit the support poles for the bridge for County Road 111, then struck the angled overpass support, and then what happened after that, he hit an electrical pole,” Det. Sgt. Darulli said.
Suffolk Police haven’t been able to question Mr. Fay. “His condition in the hospital is critical and he was unable to be interviewed,” Sgt. Darulli said.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at the 7th Squad at 852-8752.
