We are a week away from Thanksgiving and closing in on the season of generosity. This holiday season will probably bear down a little harder on most of us, but there is always a way of giving, even if it’s in the smallest of details.
The East Hampton Rotary Club will sponsor its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive (Heavy Bags) to benefit local food pantries on Saturday, November 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the IGA supermarkets in Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton and Sag Harbor. Rotarians will be seeking donations of food and or funds.
Rob Norrby, president of the Rotary, has urged residents to be especially generous since food pantries have been stretched to their limit this year.
For information on this event, or if you wish to participate, please call 238-5257 or visit Rotary’s website: www.easthamptonrotary.us
The East Hampton Rotary meets each Monday at 5:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. dinner meeting at the Bamboo Restaurant, Montauk Highway, East Hampton.
The East Hampton Historical Society has announced its 2009 House and Garden Tour, which will showcase some of the finest examples of traditional and modern architecture on the East End. This year’s tour, comprised of six unique homes, most with extensive gardens, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 28, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., with a kick-off cocktail party on Friday, November 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. Of particular note is the elegant country house “Hertenhof,” the site of this year’s kick-off cocktail party. Located in the Grace Estate, this traditional Georgian country residence on a 6-acre site was completed in 2000 and is home to interior designers Peter van Hattum and Harold Simmons.
Included in this year’s tour are a recently renovated hilltop contemporary with Three Mile Harbor water views, a stately 1931 Aymar Embury II Colonial Revival estate on Further Lane, an 1889 Dutch gambrel shingled compound on Ocean Avenue, a 1972 Hardy, Holtzman, and Pfieffer contemporary overlooking the Maidstone Golf Club’s course, and a European villa set among lush English gardens.
“Why does the East Hampton Historical Society choose to include modern architecture along with historic on our annual house tour?” asks Richard Barons, the society’s executive director. “We believe it is the mix of architectural styles—from earlier times to today—that gives East Hampton its unique character and flavor. Our community has many wonderful examples of residential architecture from the last hundred years, and we are delighted to showcase several on the tour. The House Tour committee has once again outdone themselves in identifying six different yet complementary homes that design enthusiasts and people who want a ‘look inside’ East Hampton will find of interest on this year’s house and garden tour.”
Tickets to the tour are $65 in advance and $75 on the day of the tour. Tickets to the cocktail party are $150 and include entry to the tour the following day. All tickets may be purchased by calling the East Hampton Historical Society office at 324-6850, or in person at Clinton Academy at 151 Main Street on Friday, November 27, and Saturday, November 28, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. More information on the event is available on the East Hampton Historical Society website, www.easthamptonhistory.org.
The corporate sponsor for this year’s house tour is Tiffany & Co.
