A group of veterans of the VFW Post 5350 of Quogue paid tribute to deceased and missing in action soldiers on Veterans Day last week.

There are certain things you can count on in our village, which is part of what makes it such a wonderful place to call home.

For example, you can always count on the Quogue Library to keep you up to date on all the skills necessary for navigating the technical challenges that the 21st century continues to thrust in our path. Today, Thursday, November 19, our own Mr. Wizard, Jim Garity, will be back at the library at 6:30 p.m. to teach “All About the Internet,” a basic driver’s manual for all those just getting their learner’s permits in preparation for cruising the information superhighway.

This lecture/workshop will provide all the answers about how to get online, find information, send e-mail and understand the jargon of the internet.

A brand new class on Digital Photo Imaging will be offered at the library on two Saturdays, November 21 and December 19, at 3:15 p.m. both days. This class will cover some of the basics of digital photography, including terminology, taking better pictures, transferring images to your computer, and editing images using free online software programs.

Students will need to have a working knowledge of their camera and bring the camera and connector cord to class. Just as with any other slightly advanced course, there are prerequisites, in this case, prospective digital shutterbugs must have completed the requirements for Computer Literacy 101 or have basic comprehension of Windows programs.

Bear in mind that all classes require advance registration and have a $5 fee; call the library at 653-4224 for details or to register.

The November Film Feast is set for Saturday, November 21, with the feasting to begin at 6:30 p.m. and this month’s film, “Valentino: The Last Emperor,” screening at about 7:15 p.m.

A feature-length movie that takes the viewer inside the singular world of one of Italy’s most famous designers, Valentino Garavani, “The Last Emperor” documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of the fashion icon’s celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life and work, and also explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today while paying homage to the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.

As always, price of admission is a dinner dish that serves six and a beverage to share. Call the library to save a seat and coordinate feasting ingredients.

Word has reached At Quaquanantuck that three outstanding scholar/teachers from U.S. universities have been selected as finalists for Baylor University’s 2010 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, the single largest award given to an individual for exceptional teaching. The award winner, who will be announced in spring 2010, will receive $200,000 plus $25,000 for his home department and will teach in residence at Baylor during fall 2010 or spring 2011.

And what does this have to do with Quogue, you may ask? Well, one of the finalists is the esteemed Post Lane pedagogue, Roger Rosenblatt, whom the Baylor website opted to identify as Dr. Roger Rosenblatt. leading this columnist to surmise that he had finally followed through on his threat to enter, and excel in, the field of dentistry.

In any event, congratulations to the good doctor for being named a finalist, and let’s all pull for him to win the Cherry. So much more gratifying than the raspberry so often awarded him in the past.
