Three women from the Shinnecock Indian Reservation were arrested last week and accused of attacking a 33-year-old woman from Flanders and a 59-year-old man from Sag Harbor at Featherstones restaurant on Jobs Lane in Southampton, according to Southampton Village Police.
Leslie C. Wade, 27, Larissa R. Hutchings, 32, and Aprili Faggins, 30, are accused of assaulting the woman at about 10:38 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison said. There was bad blood between the four woman, he explained, and the woman from Flanders was bitten in the attack.
Then the women attacked the 59-year-old man as he was exiting the bathroom at Featherstones, said Police Chief William Wilson. That scuffle then moved from the area of the restaurant near the bathrooms to just outside the establishment. The male victim, who also owns a home in New Jersey, was transported to Southampton Hospital on Saturday night; he suffered a severe eye injury that will eventually require surgery to repair, Chief Wilson said.
Following several days of police investigation, Ms. Wade, Ms. Hutchings and Ms. Faggins turned themselves in at Southampton Village Police headquarters on Windmill Lane on Thursday evening. All three women were charged with second-degree gang assault, a felony, and two counts of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. They were arraigned in Southampton Village Justice Court on Friday. Ms. Faggins posted $2,500 bail, while Ms. Hutchings posted $1,000 bail and Ms. Wade posted $500 bail.
Sgt. Lamison noted that the three women do not belong to a specific gang. Rather, New York State Penal Law defines gang assault as two or more people attacking an individual and causing a physical injury.
Chief Wilson said he does not think there was a particular reason for the attack on the 59-year-old man.
“We do not have a reason to believe the victim had done anything to warrant being attacked,” Chief Wilson said. “The parties were completely unknown to each other before the incident.”
After the initial attack against the 33-year-old woman, the 50 to 60 people at the popular bar began throwing a few bottles and glasses at each other, Sgt. Lamison said. “It got out of hand inside,” he added.
The female victim was escorted out of the bar after she was attacked, Sgt. Lamison said. He added that he thinks the 59-year-old man was just looking to leave the bar when he was jumped.
“He had no idea what went on and was just looking to get out of the place,” Sgt. Lamison said. “I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
