A 60-year-old homeless man was charged with arson after trying to set his brother’s car on fire in Flanders on Friday afternoon.

Michael Schunk tried to set his brother’s 2008 Dodge Charger on fire with lighter fluid and a lighter at around 4 p.m., according to Southampton Town Police. The car was parked in the driveway of his brother’s home on Nassau Street in Flanders at the time.

When his brother tried to stop him from setting the car on fire, Mr. Schunk kicked and scratched him, police said.

Police also found that Mr. Schunk had an illegal handgun, switchblade knife and pepper spray in his possession.

“There’s no indication about what triggered the issue,” said Southampton Town Police Sergeant Todd Bennett.

Mr. Schunk’s brother suffered only minor scratches and did not require medical attention, Sgt. Bennett said.

Mr. Schunk was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree attempted arson, both felonies, unlawfully possessing a noxious material, a misdemeanor, and trespassing and second-degree harassment, both violations.

Mr. Schunk was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court on Saturday and released after posting $900 bail, Sgt. Bennett said.

Pair Caught Stealing Copper Pipes

A man and a woman from Bellport were arrested early Friday morning after police determined that they had stolen about $60 worth of copper piping from an East Quogue house.

Southampton Town Police said they found Sherman Carter and Sylvia Wilson, both 43, who are boyfriend and girlfriend, on Lewis Road at around 12:50 a.m. carrying several sections of copper piping. Police said the pair had stolen the piping after breaking into a home on Old Country Road in East Quogue by shattering the glass of a back door. The house was unoccupied and undergoing reconstruction, police said.

Both Mr. Carter and Ms. Wilson were charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, according to police. They were arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court Friday morning.

Mr. Carter was remanded to Suffolk County jail in Riverhead without bail. Ms. Wilson was released without bail and is due back in court on November 19.

Flanders Man Charged with Assault

A Flanders man was arrested last Thursday, November 12, and accused of assaulting a man who owed him money from a previous drug deal, according to New York State Police.

Mohammed Proctor, 32, was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, after the other man told police that Mr. Proctor hit him on November 4. The victim reported the assault on November 5 and said he had been approached on Riverleigh Avenue by Mr. Proctor, who asked him for money that was owed for a previous drug sale. When he refused to give Mr. Proctor money—because, he said, the “drugs” turned out to be baking soda—Mr. Proctor punched him in the face three or four times, causing bruising and swelling, police said.

The victim was able to run away and Mr. Proctor fled the scene as well, according to police.

Mr. Proctor was later arrested. He was released without bail and is due back in Southampton Town Justice Court on November 24.
